Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Italy (including Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice)

Need a first-night restaurant in Rome, near the Spanish Steps...

Traveling with my 13-year-old (adventurous eater) to Rome next week, staying at the Inn at the Spanish Steps, looking for a good meal (food is our main concern, not atmosphere) not far from the hotel for our first night. Asked the concierge about La Rampa (boards had said they have great carbonara) and she suggested we not go there, steered us towards Le Sorelle. Any thoughts? Trust Chowhounds more than concierges! Probably will be an early-ish dinner because we will have just arrived. Many thanks, I know there are lots of posts on Rome but it's a little overwhelming!

    1. In this case trust the concierge.La Rampa is a tourist trap and awful.Your choice will also depend on the night you are arriving as many restaurants are closed on either Sun,Mon or Tues.Le Sorelle( Via Belsiana,30) is closed Tues.On the same street is Trattoria da Gigi(Via Belsiana,94).Less expensive, simpler and tasty, with homemade pastas, also closed Tues. There are many great restaurants within walking distance of your area. Not a fan of Nino's or Ristorante'34'.

Suggest you visit Palatium on Via Frattina, not far from your Inn. Modern place with wine bar on ground floor, quieter dining area on upper level. Creative food based on products of Lazio, the region of which Rome is a part. Reasonable prices on food and wines of Lazio. Do a search on Palatium on this Board and you will find good reviews, including mine from December 2009.

We are arriving in Rome next month and are staying near the Spanish Steps. We are arriving on a Saturday afternoon. The concierge has offered to make dinner reservations but we're wary. We eat lightly for dinner but want beautifully cooked top quality ingredients; price not an issue if the quality is there. We're not big on alcohol. I've been disappointed on previous trips to Rome. We would be interested in recommendations even including using taxis to get there.. Out of the central tourist area is okay.

Just returned from a first trip to Rome. I would not get hung up on distance from hotel etc. I found Rome to be very compact, all taxi rides were less than 10 euro generally. We had a wonderful meal at Il Drappo, we went with the Sardinian prix fix and were not disappointed although we almost went back the next night to eat off the menu. The people were kind and helpful with the menu and teh atmosphere very nice. Its a nice romantic spot. We also had la Campana, more of a neighborhood joint. More light and louder, service was very good, very accomodating of our limited italian. First night was Da Danilo, which was very good but unaccomodating in language, menu help, etc but it was very much a neighborhood spot, we came in and it was empty at 8pm (as we would expect in EU) but jammed at 10pm,,mostly men, odd. Stcik with lazio wines we had a few very good choices and they were very reasonable.
