Help needed- recs in NDG

We will be staying in NDG for a weekend in April. Can folks familiar with this neighborhood recommend one fine dining and other casual family type restos? We like all kinds of food, price not as important as taste :)

          Notre Dame de Grâce.
Largely residential neighbourhood located west of Westmount, east of Montreal West, south of Côte St-Luc and Snowdon.

Thanks Carswell, Have enjoyed your other posts. Quite informative and well balanced. Rique

            2. Fine dining in NDG... I live in the area but I never quite think of my neighborhood as a fine dining destination, but here you go: Le Maistre on Monkland is probably the closest we come :-) French style cuisine.

For casual, family friendly, I'd go to Pasta Casareccia on Sherbrooke. Fresh pasta and great sauces. Oh and the stuffed fried olives OMG! They also have some Italian groceries and a deli counter.

Alex H which is almost across from Pasta C. is a bring-your-wine, casual place that serves French bistro food with a hint of North African flair.

La Maison India on Sherbrooke has good Indian food and they are a really friendly bunch of people too. If you order for a pickup and pay cash, they offer a discount.

Lucille's on Monkland is a kind of Southern style oyster shack wannabe; the prices are outrageous, esp the wine, but the beers are still affordable AND they do have 1$ oysters after 10 pm. So that can be a good deal for the grownups staying up later.

Also fun for kiddies big and small, check out Sparkles, a candy store on Monkland again, in the basement under the wine store (SAQ). She has some British Cadbury chocs among the nifty sweets on offer.

I second Maison India - fantastic. Their butter chicken is out of this world.

I have to chime in with a thumbs down for Alex H. For the prices they charge (not much less than a top-notch Plateau BYO), the food needs to be a *lot* better. It would be an OK evening out at more modest prices, but no way should this place be charging over $20 for any of the mains I've sampled.

For BYO in the area, Azar (5899 Sherbrooke W.) is a much better bet. While not earth-shattering, the food is competently executed Lebanese. Not worth a detour if you're not already in the area, but a good neighbourhood joint.

                      1. re: Mr F

I admit Alex never blew me out of the water, so I'll be happy to give Azar a try! Thanks for the tip.

                      2. For a delicious and affordable family meal, check out Chalet BBQ for Montreal-style rotisserie chicken. They've been around since 1944 and beat Chalet Swiss by a mile.

If you're looking for great chicken, I'd say skip Chalet BBQ and go to Cote St. Luc BBQ. In my humble opinion (and I know that I might start a war here) but the flavour is much better at CSL and the fries are amazing.

                                Boooooo!!....Let the games begin!

Chalet is not only MUCH better but it's also more family friendly (which is what the OP was asking)

Also, I don't think there is really anything in NDG i would classify and good fine dining.

                                • re: kpzoo

Yes Chalet BBQ is by far the most amazing chicken I have ever tasted. And their fries are addictive. A must try.

                                  • great Persian resto right accross from Vendome Metro with good prices...NDG is very close to downtown and even Plateau...if in Montreal, you have tons of choices, so dont restrict yourself to NDG
