Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Greater Chicago

Baby at brunch?

Can anyone recommend a good place downtown to go to for Sunday brunch, that is baby friendly?
I have a lot of places to go north, but not downtown. We'd like to avoid Cheesecake Factory and Cafe Lux (which I like except for the atmosphere), but I think somewhere like Cafe de Architects or the Peninsula are also out.

Thanks

    1. How old is the baby?

She's 4 months. We take her out a lot, but usually in the north side to places like Lula's Cafe, Tweet, Toast, Julius Meinl, etc.

          • And where in downtown? Downtown covers a large area.

The more casual breakfast places, like Orange (River North), Bongo Room (South Loop, Wicker Park), Yolk (River North, South Loop), and Eggsperience (River North) are always fine for children of all ages, including infants.

Between Old Town, the West Loop, and the South Loop. We are trying to accommodate friends who are staying downtown near the library/printer's row, I don't remember where specifically.

Too bad they closed the Orange location on Harrison; that would have been perfect.

From there, you can walk south to several breakfast type places. I really love Bongo Room. They specialize in breakfast dishes, like pretzel pancakes with white chocolate sauce, although they also have sandwiches and salads at lunchtime. The pancakes are enormous; a standard order is three of them, but you can also get one-third and two-thirds portion sizes at a reduced price, in case you want to try more than one dish. Yolk ( www.yolk-online.com ) has more conventional breakfast fare, your standard omelets and pancakes, not particularly unusual. Another place in that area for a child-friendly brunch is Eleven City Diner ( www.elevencitydiner.com ) which is a diner/deli type place.

Another alternative in that area is, instead of walking south, you can walk west to Lou Mitchell's ( www.loumitchellsrestaurant.com ), which is another place that serves conventional breakfast fare, but has been doing so for so many decades that it's a Chicago institution.

                        Great suggestions, thanks.

                    • David Burke's Primehouse has a good brunch and not too crowded,.

                        1. Even though it's crowded, I find that Hot Chocolate on Damen in Bucktown is very accomodating to a stroller or high chair.

Of course, a place like ann sather's is good, but I find it's so busy that the waitresses and busboys are constantly dashing about, carrying trays, chairs, food, etc., so you're always paranoid about something getting dropped so you're essentially holding your hands over the kid all the time.
