New Castle Farmers Market? Any reviews?

I don't live far from there, and I'd love to know if it was worth the trip. Any specific vendor recommendations?

Also (and I hope it's okay to ask here), do you know if there are any vendors that sell puppies? I'd rather not go if that's the case.

  1. If you are talking about the place opposite the New Castle Co Airport.... it has a Mennonite butcher with OK meat and sausage....a produce guy....and lots of stores with paintings on velvet etc.

It's close to the office so I go there for a sausage sandwich and some baked goods and that's about it. If you're near by you might as well go have a look. I very much prefer Booths Corner. There is a pet shop which I don't like either but not going to let that keep me from Cajun Kate's and Donut Haven, etal.

    2. I work around here now and was thinking of popping over for lunch one day this week, I don't suppose anyone has any updated recommendations? I've been warned not to expect anything on the same level as Cajun Kate's.

I have not eaten at the Farmer's Market in New Castle but it's no Booths Corner by any stretch of the imagination.

As a word of warning, food around Rt. 13 is scary at best. Oddly enough, Rt. 13 locations of Popeye's and Friday's are much worse comapred to other ones in town, not that they are so hot to begin with. There is a Jake's burgers on Rt. 13 which is OK and there is a BBQ shack on Rt. 9 off of 295 which is also OK. If it were me, I'd head up 273 and hit the Border Cafe for something better.

The best thing I've found so far is Ioannoni's Bullroasters, on Basin Rd. east of 13, they make a fantastic roast pork with broccoli rabe and provolone, as good as any I've had in Philly other than Paesano's Arista.

Ever been to Mexico Lindo? It's right by Jake's.

Mexico Lindo is very good. Be very hungry when you go there!

There's some OK pizza and a decent Mexican place but nothing worth going out of your way for. Also, remember they're usually only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (except for the Amish places which are closed on Sundays) though this week they're open the Wednesday before Thanksgiving but it will probably be a madhouse there.

I checked out the tacqueria, Los Jarritos, on Wednesday. It was pretty good, I prefer it to La Morelia, which is the only other Mexican place I've been to around here (so far). They make their own tortillas, I had a few tacos and they were on par with some of the tacquerias I like in my neighborhood (south Philly). The red salsa was good too.

          4. I like the amish baked goods at NC Farmers Market. They have killer desserts and sticky buns, but thats about the only thing in there worth going for. If you want good/cheap produce I like the Newark Farmers Market. The sell spices and herbs for very, very cheap. They also have a very extensive International section with all sorts of exotic ingredients. I also love their chocolate. They have goodies from Germany by a company called Kinder. I have never found them anywhere in the states. ( My fave is the Happy Hippo ) I also like Boothwyn for perusing and strolling. There is a Greek diner in there that has wonderful hummus and olives.
