Weber Grill questions

My Sam's house brand stainless steel grill had finally died, after being in decline for years. Reading this board has made me look at Weber.

I'm thinking the Summit series, although it costs more than the Genesis series. Any thoughts on that?

What about assembly? my husband says I need to be very careful about ordering online if I don't want to be assembling things like gas jets, etc. But local stores have little variety and full retail prices.

Any other brands I should be looking at? The Weber Summit 620 that I'm thinking of is $1800 on most websites, but I found it one place for $1360. I haven't really spend any time looking at the luxury brands (Viking, etc.) but I assume they would be WAY more?

  1. There is only 1 grille to buy. And that's a Weber. While I would never cook with anything except charcoal, the Weber gas grilles are outstanding. Don't be seduced by high end names like Viking. Your food will taste better coming off a Weber.

    1. We've owned a couple of Genesis models and I don't really think about it - which is how it should be. They start up reliably, can reach a fairly high temp and last a very long time (we live in a snow area and use it all year round but we do use a cover).

      The last one I bought was online from Amazon. "Assembly" is not all that complicated.

        I've used a Genesis for about seven years now, also in a snowy area and it lives uncovered all year 'round. I've replaced a few parts on it over the years but overall it's simple and reliable, for everything from straightforward steaks to slow smoking (if you plan to smoke you definitely need one with three separate gas controls). It cost about $450. I don't know what extra you'd be paying for with a model that costs 3 - 4 times as much.

          I think they're asking $800-ish for the Genesis now. The diff, supposedly is more cooking space and higher BTU on the Summit. It's also got a side burner. There's one other model that's $2k, that has an interior light and a smoke box, both things I'd like to have, but not things I'd like to pay and extra $600 or so for! My recently deceased grill had a rotisserie which I used a few times, but not enough for me to pay extra for it. It was a novelty, more or less.

          I did read some reveiws on Amazon that the hood leaked. I have never used a grill cover before and don't plan to start now...so I hope I don't regret this purchase.

              Now now, we're simply respecting the original poster's decision to grill with gas....no matter how wrong that may be. ;-)

              Although if you want me to mention you can get a stainless steel model of a kamado cooker, aka similar to BGE, with a travel hitch to actually transport it for $449 on clearance right now, I could...

      2. I was planning to order a Weber Summit today, but my co-worker came in this morning saying he'd seen a $5,000 retail KitchenAid grill at a local outlet store for $1,400. Anyone know anything about KitchenAid grills and their reliability? thanks

          The grills aren't actually made by KitchenAid. They are made by Nexgrill and supported by KitchenAid. The reviews I've read on the KitchenAid grills haven't been too impressive. I would go witha trusted brand over this one. If it retails for $5000 and they're trying to get rid of it for $1400, there's probably a pretty good reason why.

            thanks! after I posted, I did a little research. It appears that KA used to sub their grills to Lynx, who supposedly makes fabulous, last-forever , brass burners. Then in 2008 they switched to Nexgrill. So I went to check out the giant grill at lunch today.

            JE BUS!!! It's the biggest thing I've ever seen. I think I tore a rotator cuff trying to open the lid with one arm. I took a look at the burners...not brass...so I supposed this is a Nexgrill model. Also, I misunderstood my co-worker, it was $2600 rather than $1400 (on an original sticker of $5800)

        2. Don't let assembly hold you back...It's a snap. I've put together at least 20 of them, and find Weber the easiest, and most straight forward. Follow the directions and you'll be fine. Better you than some in-a-hurry stockboy, no?

          1. I "upgraded" from my Weber Genesis a few years ago, and have pretty much regretted it ever since. Unless you really need to grill eight chickens at a time, or unless your homeowners association requires that all grills be made of stainless steel and cost more than $1,000, the Genesis is the way to go.

            First, there are the burners. The Summit uses good burners, but they run from front to back. A grill is inherently hotter in the back than in front, so there's no way to maintain even heat. With the Genesis, the burners run from side to side, so you can just turn the back one down a little.

            Second, there's the lid. I have a (Weber-owned) Ducane rather than a Summit, so the 620 may be different, but the lid on my grill does not contain heat nearly so well as the Genesis. All other things being equal, enameled iron just has more thermal mass than stainless steel.

            Finally, there's the size of the grill surface. I thought it would be nice to have extra real estate to play with. In reality, the bigger grill is completely superfluous for 99.9% of the cooking I do, and it's tremendously inefficient - those extra burners consume extra fuel, so it seems like we're always running out of propane.

            In your shoes, I'd go for the Genesis 320, which does have a side burner.

              Homeowners association, funny! my husband stands on the pool deck and shoots things out of the pasture that GO on said grill.

              I'm torn. I really do want the extra real estate...cause I'm used to a big grilling surface, and you know it's tough to go backward. I like to grill veggies and they take up a lot of space. Are you not able to only run one burner if you're just doing 1 steak? If not, then that would, indeed, be a deal breaker. thanks.

                If you've already got a big grilling surface and find that you use it, then a big grill may be the thing for you. There were a few times I wished the Genesis had more space - especially when grilling veggies alongside chunks of meat. And the time I grilled a whole goat, the extra size was a godsend.

                You can definitely turn on a single burner (or two), but then you've got all kinds of temperature variables inside the grill, especially when you're cooking with the lid closed. Again, this may be something you're already used to dealing with, so it might not bug you the way it does me.

                Long story short, you're not going to go wrong with either choice. My personal preference is for the Genesis, but that's based on my cooking habits. YMMV.

                  Alan - thanks for the continued advice. One more question: Have you had a problem with leaks? Some reviews for the Genesis (as well as the Summit) talk about water leaks as well. (I'm not going to cover it)

                  If it 's just a matter of things stored in the cabinet getting damp, i can live with that. but if I'm going to have a pool of water in the cooking compartment , shortening the life of the burners, that's got me hesitating to pull the trigger. thanks!

                    My grill is on a covered patio, so I can't speak to leaks. Although I'm not sure where water would get in, given the lid design.

                    That said, you can't get a pool of water in the cooking compartment - the bottom is sloped and empties into a drip tray through a fairly large hole. Now if you don't empty the drip tray, intruding water could cause the fat in the tray to splash around. Also, the new models all appear to have enclosed cabinets, so water might accumulate in there. But as to the cooking compartment, you're in good shape.

                      Mine lives on an UNcovered porch, and I've never had a problem with water getting into the cooking compartment. The drip tray, yes - I'm not sure how exactly - but that's no big deal.

                      There's no way for water to pool in the "cooking compartment", it's open at the bottom. There is a drip pan holder under the opening to catch fat and liquids in a disposable foil pan. It's not possible for the burners to be immersed in liquid.
