Pineapple Upside Down Cake And Other Fabulous Desserts

Just returned from date night with my husband - dinner at Meritage and August: Osage County at the Ordway. And while our whole meal at Meritage was good - the real stunner was the pineapple upside down cake with sour cherries and creme fraiche ice cream! I'm not normally super excited about creme fraiche, but this ice cream was amazing. I seriously want a jumbo cake + ice cream for my birthday.

So this got me thinking - has anyone else had phenomenal pineapple upside down cake anywhere in MSP recently? And if not, what place/desserts do you recommend?

Not sure about PUDC but the desserts at Azia are usually spot-on. I especially love the banana rolls and almond joy. The food can occasionally miss but you'll be happy with the cranberry puffs and these desserts. I promise.

Also, I cannot remember what it was specifically but I had a chocolate/pistachio wonder at Toast Wine Bar that I enjoyed almost as must as the N/A blood orange sparking juice. I searched high/low for this juice (Gavioli maybe) and just recently found it at Surdyks.

The current crop of desserts at Brasa St. Paul is quite amazing. Especially the butterscotch pudding and the bourbon chocolate tart. Just had 'em again tonight. Wow, just wow.

That butterscotch pudding has eluded me for a long time. I'm undergoing "lifestyle" changes and losing weight, so I try not to make a habit of eating dessert constantly. When I finally decided last fall or this winter to treat myself to the butterscotch pudding they took it off the menu! Glad to hear it's back... I'll have to try it one of these days.

Seige, Meritage uses (well..has used) the Salted Caramel ice cream from Izzy's. Was there any hint that the creme fraiche ice cream was from Izzy's as well?

Come to think of it, I did see the creme fraiche ice cream offered at Izzy's when I was there about two or three weeks ago.

They didn't specifically say it was Izzy's, but it had all the Izzy hallmarks (deep flavor, smooth), so I wouldn't be surprised if it was Izzy's. If it is, I'm glad I got a sample of it at Meritage because I would have NEVER thought to order that at Izzy's.

If I'm over there any time soon, I'll scope it out for you. With the Salted Caramel, they do mention it's from Izzy's, but now I can't remember if it's on the menu or they server just says it. Either way, your dessert sounds excellent!

i was at izzy's on st paddy's day and noticed they did have creme fraiche ice cream, so it seems like that's a current offering and likely that the feature at meritage is from them. i got a different flavor combo though-- wish i'd tried it now!

It has been a little while, but I had really good Pinapple Upside Down Cake at Brasa.

I am going to Meritage tomorrow - I hope they still have the cake you mention - it sounds awesome. Thanks for the hint. :-)

I had it and it was indeed awesome. I love the way the ice cream was not too sweet with the cake and was balanced by the tang from the cherries. :-)
