Lunch on Saturday near the National Mall last weekend of March

  • 8

Ok, my first post failed miserably since I posted it so poorly. I have abandoned any thoughts of picnics etc....(very foolish I have been told). Many of the nicer restaurants don't seem to have Saturday lunch. Any suggestions for a a place that would accommodate a group which includes 2 toddlers and an infant. Worried that museum cafes will be shoulder to shoulder. price not as important as good food and convenience so we can still visit a museum around the mall that day. We are good at ethnic. Thanks again for all those who answered the first one and all those who answer this one.

    1. You are close to several metro stops, depending on where you end up on the mall. The Smithsonian is on the end closer to the Sackler and Freer. The Federal Triangle metro is just north of the mall, near American History or Natural History. Archives/Navy Memorial is very near the National Gallery of Art, L'Enfant Plaza has an exit near Air and Space, Federal Center SW is near the Museum of the American Indian. So if you're flexible on metro stops and museum visits, you can greatly expand your choices.

For example, Federal Center SW is just two stops from Eastern Market, where you have a variety of choices: Market Lunch at Eastern Market, Tunnicilffs for pubby food, Cava for Greek, Matchbox for pizza and mini-burgers, Monmarte for French (maybe not open for lunch?) Belga for Belgian, 7 Hills for pizza...

Archives is on the South end of Penn Quarter, where you'll find tons of choices. Zaytinya (mentioned before), Jaleo, Poste, another Matchbox, Teasim...

Search wmata.com for the metro web site to give you an idea of the metro layout relative to the mall, choose your museum, your closest metro stop, and look at what's near or on the way to/from that metro.,

      Enjoy.

Good advice from dcandohio about looking at wmata.com for metro layout relative to the mall - I completely concur. The mall is really huge and you can waste a lot of time walking from place to place. Decide first which museum you want to go to, see what Metro stop is nearby, then think about restaurants near there.

The Eastern Market itself for Market Lunch and a fun scene on a Sat. - though be aware that the line there can be l-o-n-g. Matchbox for OK pizza and mini-burgers, 7 Hills for pretty good but expensive pizza, and Good Stuff Eatery (about a 3 block walk from Eastern Market) for very good burgers and great milkshakes.

          2. I live near the Archives/Penn Quarter Metro, so I'm thinking of that Mall-adjacent location. If you're looking for something really close to the Mall and Metro, I second Teaism or Jaleo. Oyamel is also good (http://www.oyamel.com/) and only a couple of blocks from the Mall.

If you head up toward the Hill, I would also second Good Stuff Eatery (it's a little bit closer to the Capitol South Metro than Eastern Market).
