65th birthday dinner for six?
My friend wanted Union Square for her big birthday -- we called the first morning the reservations opened for the date in question, but alas! shut out! We are on the waiting list there, but need alternatives. Help? Price range: around $100/person all inclusive tops. Food: no particular type of cuisine, anything great, probably leans towards Italian if anything. Ambiance: A space where conversation is possible -- it will be a table of folks that like to talk. Also, must have windows (no underground a la "81"). Would prefer the west side, up or downtown, but will travel for sure. Right now, our backup reservation is at Beacon which one of the crowd recommended, but after reading this board, I'm scared...
Any suggestions? Many thanks.
Second Convivio. I finally tried it yesterday and had a wonderful meal. I think it's my new favorite Italian (though I haven't been to Scarpetta yet).
The room was more modest than Alto and Marea but seemed more formal (most of the men wore jackets). The food was amazing - again I've only been there once but all of our courses - stracciatella, tuna tartare, amatrice, carbonara, grilled mackerel, bistecca, bomboloni, and almond cake with mascarpone creme were really memorable.
Service was efficient but not overbearing (though a bit reserved compared with the Danny Meyer establishments, in case that's an issue). I noticed a few round tables which would be suitable for a party of six. The noise level was lively but not deafening. Windows, yes. $62 prix fixe for four courses - definitely with your budget.
I think Convivio would be a fine choice for a birthday celebration.
