Release Tomorrow March 17th at 1 PM PST

Hi Chowhounds-
We are getting ready for a release that is scheduled for Wednesday March 17th at 2 PM. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but also we wanted to let you know of the new improvements that will be available after the release.

Editing Restaurant Info Open to All Users-
After releasing the Restaurants and Bars section in October we have heard from many of you that some of the data is missing or down right incorrect. We know that there are just too many for our little team to manually fix – so we have opened up the Restaurant edit feature to all users.

However we don't want restaurants using this as an opportunity to self-promote, so we're still limiting the 'Good to Know' field to established members who've requested full edit rights.

If you would like to be able to edit that field, or mark restaurants as duplicate, reply to this post - http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/655867

If you're a restaurant or food business looking to update your own information (hours, website, etc), feel free to edit the factual details on your restaurant page by clicking the edit button after the release.

Relaxed Automated Rules on auto linking-
Before a user had to have a capitalized exact match in order for our auto-linking feature to work. So in the example of The French Laundry Restaurant, if a user typed french laundry into their post we wouldn’t auto link it. Now we have excluded needing to put “The” and “Restaurant” so that if someone types French Laundry inline auto-linking should work.

New Commenting Look and Feel –
There used to be four different ways that a user could comment on Chow. We've streamlined the experience so that it's just one version across the site. Now you will be able to comment the same way whether it’s on a Video, a Recipe, or a Story.

Cheers and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  1. Is there any reason that posts on things like table manners dont show up under my posts/

MyPosts relates only to the Chowhound discussion forum, which is comprised entirely of user generated content. Table Manners is not a Chowhound discussion forum component, but a component of the Chow editorial content, those comments are not tracked by the discussion forum application but you can see those comments in the 'All Activity' section of your myCHOW page.

In July we will be updating MyChow and adding new features. One additional feature is to allow all comments and posts to be contained with the MyPosts area. Check back here - on Site Talk - around July for more info.

    2. This record for Black Oak Restaurant http://www.chow.com/restaurants/59624... is linked to a discussion about Black Oak bookstore.

      1. It seems your "relaxed automated rules" on auto linking are bringing back some of the problems with auto linking from the past. On this thread - http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/695563 - the OP mentions Sushi of Gari. Your auto link links to Gari which is not the same thing (there are 2 Sushi of Garis and 1 Gari). Please fix the problem or we're going to have all the same issues we had in the past that were so frustrating and made the auto link feature unusable.

Hi LNG212- thank you for the feedback, we understand that in the beginning the auto-linking was a bit rocky but believe that the recent changes made on relaxing the rules are a move in the right direction. We will be making slight tweaks, and continuous improvements, until we get to the sweet spot where links are right. But until then, users still have the option of manually choosing where the link points to, or removing them all together if they aren't right. We appreciate your patience, and your feedback, as we continue to work towards achieving the sweet spot.

        2. Hello Chow HQ, is creating new records now open to everyone as well as editing? I've notice that the DUPLICATE problem in back on the SF Bay Area board with newly created R&B records. What are you doing to address this? The old duplicates haven't been removed from the system yet from when the new R&B feature rolled out, and now we have new ones created with each new record by newbies to the feature.

          1. Im mystified about how the autolinking works. Does it only work for posts after the Restaurant listing is created on Chow? or is there a way to pull in old reviews and discussions later on?

Is there a way of adding international areas? going on the Chow restaurant page you would not know that there are any international listings.

Yes, I believe there must be a Restaurant & Bar record in the database before auto linking can work. I've been successful in creating new records for a couple spots in Mexico, haven't tried for other countries yet.

Since The French Laundry is used as an example in the original post, I'll add a comment that auto-linking seems to work extraordinarily well for that restaurant. The link appears not just inline within the post but also at the bottom. This seems to be one of the few that does both consistently. If Chow isn't getting paid for highlighting this restaurant above all others, it certainly should as the number of PR impressions is quite high.

Are there some directions somewhere about how all this is supposed to work? Its a lot of effort to populate the Restaurant area ahead of reports (or for people making comments to populate this) - if its not gong to link back effectively its not really worth the effort. I set up a couple of restaurants in Rome and then tried to make a sample report, but I didnt see any linkage happening or any message coming up asking me if I am posting a review, as will often (not always ) happen in the US. It should work when there is a response to an existing thread, not just to a new post or a post with the name in the thread title. Im really puzzled and would appreciate some input from site management before trying to make any more effort here.

When R&B first launched there was a video starring Jane Goldman but it seems to have disappeared. When you post on a regional board, you can add a link using the "add" function under the manage your links section, but be aware that it takes a while to show up . . . see other posts on this board about this issue. It works for me as a response to an existing thread. Maybe you could provide a url for the thread where it didn't work to get Engineering to look at the situation.

Good luck on getting input from site management.

                  1. re: Melanie Wong

I think I am missing some basic info - where does the "manage your links" section appear?

Is there a post or basic info somewhere on the site that describes how all these linkages are intended to work?

                    1. re: jen kalb

When you open a posting window to start a new topic or to reply in an existing topic, you should see two gray bars under the window and just above the Post My Reply red button. This only works on regional boards; topical ones such as Site Talk don't have linking ability. The upper bar says Manage your Links, and to the right side, What Is This. The second bar is Attach Photo. Try clicking on Manage Your Links and What Is This.
