Rec for good restaurant near 48th St. and 8th Ave.

  • 6

Can someone recommend a good restaurant around 48th St and 8th Ave for this Friday night? My son doesn't like French food, he prefers sushi or more simply prepared dishes. We prefer more intimate places with creative food. Our son lives in NY but doesn't know any places in the Times Sq area.

  1. check out Thalia, Victors Cafe, and Baan.

your best bet would be to head over to 9th Ave, where the board will recommend Marseille (French, I know but not completely) or Five Napkin Burger. Aqua Dulce recently opened on 9th and 54(?)...i've only been for drinks, but it looked nice.

Aqua Dulce indeed looks nice, but judging by my one aggressively mediocre brunch there, the food is not very good.

I've had good experiences at Marseille, Orso, Hell's Kitchen, Pam Real Thai, and Uncle Nick's.

I second each of small h's recs and strongly advise against Thalia. Bland and overpriced.

    2. Sushi of Gari 46 is both sushi and creative. Pricey, though.

        1. I live at 48th and 8th, and there are tons of good restaurants in the area (also a ton of crappy ones -- but just avoid the obvious tourist traps and you will be okay).

My favorite restaurant in the area is a downstairs hole-in-the-wall called "Sake Bar Hagi" it is on 49th between 7th and 6th. It is the most fantastic small plate, Japanese restaurant in town. They don't serve sushi (although the restaurant upstairs does), but their food is all fantastic. 9th Ave also has a lot of really good restaurants, especially if you are in the mood for Thai. They are all very reasonably priced and very delicious. My favorite is Chili Thai (on 9th Ave near 49th street).

If you are in the mood for Mexican, there is a fantastic spot on 50th between 8th and Bway called Tolache. It is a bit expensive for Mexican food, but well worth it! If you like guacamole, try their guacamole sampler. I also highly recommend the tortilla soup and the shrimp ceviche.

Finally, for Italian, if you are so inclined, there are two very good options nearby. First, La Maseria (which is at 48th and 8th) -- very convenient and the food is solid. Second, A Voce, which is in the Time Warner Center (58th and 8th -- so a bit further away), but absolutely great.
