Post-wedding drinks in Barcelona

naranjita Mar 16, 2010 10:37 AM

My partner and I are getting married at the registro civil in Barcelona (off the Ramblas, near the port) in April. The wedding celebration will be held at a Basque restaurant later in the evening, but we would like to take our 15 guests (only half of which are Spanish) for some drinks and tapas/pintxos in a relaxed bar right after the registry. The time is a little tricky: Monday, around noon. We walked around the area last Sunday, but didn't find anything too exciting. I read quite a few of the posts on the board but nothing seemed quite right. The ideal place would be an El Quim styled bar located in a nice placa or with a pleasant terrace.
Any ideas?
Many thanks!

I think the Sagardi on C/ Argenteria fits all your requirements as long as you don't mind going Basque for both lunch and dinner.

My recommendation is not far from Argenteria, at the hip and chic wine bar La Vinya Del Senyor on Plaça Santa Maria in front of the Santa Maria del Mar church, which is quite near the port.

        Dear SnackHappy and Parigi,

        Thank you for your help.

We thought of Sagardi but it might turn out to be a mono-thematic eating day...
La Vinya Del Senyor sounds perfect, only it's closed on Mondays!

        Any more ideas?

O of course La Vinya is closed Mondays, sorriest.
There is the elegant winter garden in the Ciutadella park, l'Hivernacle (Passeig de Picasso) Parc de la Ciutadella
The tricky thing is that it is "theoretically" open everyday from 10am to midnight, but often when I pass by I find it closed. Best to call ahead and tell them you are a small wedding party and want to make certain it is open +34 93 295 4017
I think you can even rent part of the place for your private party. I have seen private parties there.
O and congratulations. You will have a lovely wedding.

Thank you all for your congratulations!

Parigi, l'Hivernacle looks beautiful. I will go exploring on the weekend!

Many thanks for all the ideas.

The Museum Maritim café can be a backup. I had a very pleasant morning coffee there once. The staff was toward the desultory side.
It is just about right on the port and its opening hours may be more reliable than L'Hivernacle. But I'm not sure if the museum café serves wine. The other drawback is that it is on the Ramblas. If I crossed any one of those loser mimes on my wedding day I'd feel jinxed !

Another vote for l'Hivernacle. Call first.

                    Dear Parigi and Shiromaguro,

We went to see the L'Hivernacle on Saturday (mid-day) and it was deserted! It's truly an impressive building. Sadly we couldn't find any traces for it ever housing a café ...Could it be that it only opens in the summer? I might give them a call during the week. Oh, and the La Vinya Del Senyor looked lovely, it's a shame it closes on Mondays.

As to the Ramblas, I hear you Parigi. Also, wouldn't be very nice to have the guests pick-pocketed!

As for now, we have two options: a few chilled bottles of cava and light snakes at the Parc La Citadelle or some drinks at the Galician bar Celta near the registro civil.

                    Thanks again for the ideas!

Another spectacular bar is the one at the Palau de la Musica, albeit a somewhat longer walk.
A nearer walk would be the wowey hotel W and its several bars, one trendier than the next.
                      Btw, "light snakes"?
That appeals to me - of Chinese origin - big time!

                        Hey Parigi,
I love the bar at the Palau! I will keep it as an option. The W hotel might be a little too trendy for our party, though. Maybe for an evening for the ladies (which seems to be another problem since I planned to have it on Sunday and so many places are closed!)

I´d love to hear any ideas for Chinese snaking (especially if they go well with Cava!)
