Locating a restaurant - and DELETE botton as well...

I'd like to suggest a feature to borrow from Craigslist (CL) to improve Chowhound. On CL when posting the title they require a field locating your posting. It appears when posted next to the title in parentheses.

I would like to suggest that this would be a terrific addition to all boards, even those limited to a single city. Because if the board is limited to a single city, that's because the city is large. It's perfectly possible for a restaurant noted in the text to be over an hour's drive from another restaurant noted elsewhere in the thread. The links can help locate the sites, but a convention of listing the neighborhood would be awfully helpful. Imagine how useful it would be to someone trying to navigate, say, Montréal if you could read Chalet (NDG) and Bouchonné (Plateau).

When the board is for a region this would be all the more critical. For example "Northern New England". That encompasses multiple states! Wouldn't it be better to read XYZ (Portland) and PQR (Vermont), which will automatically distinguish locales a day's drive from one another? How about some of the other boards where it's possible to be talking about restaurants in multiple time zones? I think it would be a big help on the Ontario board, for example, to see XYZ (Toronto) and PQR (Ottawa); the cities are completely different and far apart and yet the board natters on about both interchangeably.

The field needn't be mandatory, but prompting for it might really help clarify the suggestion-effort.

Thanks.

    1. Oops, I see now a long thread on this already: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/671118

I add my amen. And retain the above in explanation of some's confusion as to the need for the feature. I think it's important in single-city boards as well as regional ones, as noted above.

*But* ... all this leads me to another request: for a DELETE button as well as EDIT that shows only to the OP of a topic or reply.

It's pretty rare that I need to delete one of my many posts. However, there have been a few rare occasions when I have had a reason to do so. In such cases, I've used the "Report" button to pass along a request for it to be deleted, along with an explanation why. The Chowhound Team has been good about doing so in response to such requests (hopefully this means my reasons have been reasonable).

And yes, the site does permit you to report your own posts to make such requests.

Here's the post from the Chowhound Team stating that they won't delete posts on request.

It depends on whether they have (or had, at one time) legitimate content, especially if others have replied, in which case they need to be retained.

I've had instances where a post was in some way invalid - for example, had incorrect information that I corrected in another post, or where I said something wrong and I was able to edit it to remove any content within the two-hour window - and they have deleted such a post on request.

I haven't done it very often, and I haven't made requests for reasons that might be seen as inappropriate or inadequate.

Sorry if that post gave the impression we never delete posts on request. If there is a valid reason for the post deletion (we don't count being tired of seeing it in your My CHOW list as a valid reason) and the removal won't impact other posters' responses by making them appear to be out of context, we'll do our best to remove posts that have been self-reported.
