"Cook infront of you" restaurants in local gta

Im looking for a nice place to take my family out. Somewhere where your table has a personal chef and he cooks for your group.

Someone told me there was an asian place near mccowan and finch or something.

Can anyone recommend me some places?

  1. If it is Asian you are after, a couple places: Tako Sushi on Don Mills (casual) & Yamato in Yorkville (upscale)

    If it is other you are looking for, my friends and I arranged for a personal chef who we "helped" make dinner at La Bruchetta on St. Clair. In reality, they prepared the raw sheets of pasta, ravioli fillings, and all other prep work in advance and then we did the fun stuff, like stuff the raviolis, after which they did the real cooking & plating. It included wine and was a lot of fun (they even gave us aprons!)

    1. In Markham there is a place called Taste of Japan. It has what is called teppanyaki, which means Japanese style, they cook in front of you, usually things like teriyaki chicken, or beef or seafood.
      I believe there might still be a Benihana downtown. Benihana is a well known chain from the US that specializes in teppanyaki. I hear they put on quite the show, never been to Benihana myself.

        Teppanyaki is very hit or miss. If you get a really talented chef who knows how to handle his knives and spatula, it can be fun. Otherwise, you just get a guy who chops away, and occasionally bangs the handles together.

        As for the food, teppanyaki food is quite boring. A fried main, with fried noodles and fried vegetables, all chopped up. Wow.

          I think Teppanyaki can be very interesting if you visit a good Teppanyaki restaurant. Food cooked in front of you and eat it at the moment when it is ready, almost in its best form.

          A simple bowl of fried rice is always hard to make it right. Have you tried a bowl of simple Japanese garlic fried rice cooked with beef fat from a A5 wagyu beef ? It requires lots of skill to cook it right and it is delicious. Or a whole piece of Unagi, fried it over and over on the iron plate, then apply the unagi sauce made from the unagi bone when the fish skin is sizzling crisp ?? It requires very good control from the chef !

            Maybe those things are available in Japan, but I've been in Benihanas across North America, and used to eat at Katsura at the Prince. Beef, chicken, shrimp were all that were ever offered.

            I'm not saying that teppanyaki CAN'T be great - I'm saying in the GTA and indeed in most of North America, it's boring and plain. There's more diversity in the worst sushi bar. Benihana bears the same relation to real Japanese food that the Mandarin does to real Chinese.

              Akasaka in Richmond Hill is a ok place for Teppanyaki. It's dinner set is not too bad to give an idea of what a Teppanyaki is like. It also features A5 wagyu beef, but it is very expensive just like everywhere else which provides this kind of beef.

      2. Nami used to have tables where the chef cooked in front of you. If you had a large enough group (8-10, IIRC), you could have the table for your group.

        1. The restaurant at McCowan and Sheppard is Ten-Ichi (northside of Sheppard, east of McCowan). One side is teppanyaki and the other side is AYCE.

          There's also Fire and Ice on Hwy. 7 and Woodbine Ave. You select your ingredients and have them cook it up. Haven't been in many years though.

            At Fire and Ice is kind of buffet style you get up and wait for your food, where as teppanyaki you sit in front of the cooking surface.

          2. What about Katsura at the Prince Hotel? You can sit at a table where the chef cooks in front of you (I have not been there since I was a kid so I might have this wrong!).
