Is there an upscale Mexcian restaurant in the Valley?

Something more upscale than Barrio Cafe and Gallo Blanco.

Is La Hacienda the most viable option?

  1. I think for something more upscale than Barrio or Gallo Blanco, La Hacienda would be your *only* option without leaving town.

    1. Not pure Mexican, but what about?:

      The Mission
The Richardsons/Rokerij combo (though more New Mex)
      Deseo (more pan-Latin)

Maybe midscale, but getting there, how about Fuego bistro on 7th st and bethany? Had some nice lunches and dinners there.

      2. I can't say that I have been wowed by consistently great Mexican food in a moderately priced, decently good food place.
In the east valley. I have tried Manuels, Serranos, Garcias, Macayos, El Charro, Nandos and a few others.
I was particularly pleased with Si Senor in Chandler, and for What i would call New Mexican Food it was good, great portions and helpfull staff.
El Charro in Mesa is still a favorite for the staples, Beans, Tacos and sublime enchiladas. I think they offer great chips and salsa. It is a local Icon and can disapoint.
I have never tried Tia Rosas. There is something about the place that turns me off. I just can't make it in there.
I am always open to trying new places but haven't been inspired by a whole lot lately.

The places you have listed are generally chain operated "Americanized" Mexican places that primarily dish up pre prepared food off of steam tables, top it all with cheese and melt the daylights out of it. If you want great Mexican food at truly reasonable prices you have to hit the real places:
          Los Taquitos
          La Condesa
          America's Taco Shop
          Pepe's Taco Villa
          Guero's Tortas
          Los Reyes de la Torta

All of these and others can be searched on this site. they appear frequently.

          Pepe's Taco Villa
          2108 W Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85015

          America's Taco Shop
          2041 N 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ

          Los Taquitos

Old Town Tortilla Factory in Scottsdale is more upscale but the menu can be hit or miss.
I like it, but it"s a love or hate thing on this board.

        2. Has anyone mentioned Tradiciones at the PHX Ranch Market (did not hear that it burned the other night)?

Don't really consider Tradiciones upscale. Plus, I hate, absolutely hate, the mariachi kitsch.

          2. Just dined at La Hacienda tonight. I don't have much of a frame of reference as to other Mexican places as it's not normally our favorite thing to eat out. Everything we ordered was delicious though. We'll give it another visit at some point for sure.

The mission was good enough first time to get a return visit at some point too.
