BR& and WEST in YYC

BR& opened up on Stephen Ave on Friday. In an old heritage building that was once a bank. Looks very intimidating from the street, I must admit. Anyone been in yet or know anything about it?

WEST restaurant, winebar and roof top patio in Scotia Center (+15,+30 levels and the roof) is set to be open by April. Managed to get a peek inside last week when the construction crew was leaving. Looks pretty amazing. Thoughts?

BR& steak frites? Asked about it a while back- let's hope the space works, IMO this is just too cavernous for one resto.

They're calling it WEST? Isn't that a little daring, maybe approaching sacrilege? Why not call it Charlie Trotter's instead?:-)

..and google tells me via the Sun that BR& (BRAND, get it? Not BRAMPERSAND) is owned by the Stage West people. Considering what I've heard about food at Stage West, i'm unenthused.

Brampersand! HA! I wish that was the actual name. Is the location that was a&b sound for many years?

Nope- it's across the street, was The Banke and then Rococo.

Famine is better than the food at Stage West.

          That's right, chronic starvation.

WEST isn't affiliated by the Top Table group that owns West in Vancouver is it? My gut and mind say no but thought I'd check. I've always had great meals at West in Vancouver.

WEST is owned by the Concorde Group-Bungalow, Mercury, Sky 360 et al. I poked my head into BR&. They haven't done a single thing to it since it was Rococo. I had a lease ready to sign on the space in 2004 but things didn't work out. I wish them all the best but it's going to be a tough go, especially with Charcut just opening down the block.

I'm more of the opinion that anyone who chooses such a painfully hip and trendy name like BR& really doesn't have a business plan that extends more than 6 months into the future anyway.

How is that name hip or trendy- even "painfully" so? It's confusing and silly is what it is.

But you'd be surprised- I know I am- at how some restos take what seem like ridiculous names and end up doing great. I cannot think of a better example than the completely confusing "New York Subway" in Toronto, a sort of fusion burrito place that has nothing to do with NY or Subs. The food sells it.

Silly and confusing indeed. Clever and witty? Uuuuuhh... No.

My real issue though is with West. One of Canada's very best Restaurants, Vancouver's West is truly incredible and I can't believe the name is being replicated here.

Concorde Group no less? Wow quite a collection of places they are amassing. I hope the Toptable group is pissed.
