Chez Spencer or Spruce, thoughts?
Hey everyone, I'm torned between going to Chez Spencer or Spruce, both restaurants I have not tried yet. I felt like going to some place special but will be dining alone and don't want to necessarily dress up too much. (Maybe a jacket, but don't feel like a tie; if I can wear jeans with a jacket, perfect!)
I initially thought of Spruce because I heard good things about the chef, and it's been on my list for a long time. But then a friend told me of her special dinner at Chez Spencer, which has been around for a long time and has a good rep too.
What's the pros and cons? Which is nicer for a solo diner? Which has interesting things on the menu to choose from?
Thanks in advance for weighing in!
I've never been to Chez Spencer but I've had mixed experiences at Spruce. I went for a private event and the food was very good, well executed, standard flavor profiles, nothing adventurous. Still, it was good enough to return. Later, I met some friends for a casual DAT lunch and was disappointed by some undercooked risotto and a somewhat dry hamburger. We agreed that the high point of the meal, if any, were the (duck fat?) french fries. You could wear jeans and a jacket. I remember a small bar area, but the service and the atmosphere is such that I probably wouldn't go there as a solo diner.

Definitely Spruce. Grab a seat at the bar. Often mentioned as one of the best places to dine alone, and I totally agree. Spruce has a great bar menu in addition to their dinner menu.
Chez Spencer is not somewhere you go alone.
