Soffritto (Calgary)

The Flavours of the World store in Canyon Meadows has a new owner and a new name.

Flavours of the World has moved on to become more of a wholesaler/supplier, as now states that they are "Offering the world's finest ingredients for retail and food service professionals" from a location in Manchester Industrial Park.

The store in Canyon Meadows is now renamed to Soffritto. The products are still very similar (e.g. specialty salts/spices/rice/oils and other gourmet ingredients, along with fresh pastas and sauces, vaccuum packed prepared entrees, gourmet cheese and sausage, etc.). Doesn't appear to be a website yet, but the contact info for Soffritto is:

2116 - 380 Canyon Meadows Drive SE
Calgary, AB T2J 7C3

Soffritto is still retail -- pretty much the same store, just with a new name.

    2. I had some great beer braised beef short ribs from Soffritto's a few weeks ago. They were outstanding and I really liked the Yukon beer that went with them.

      1. Thank you so much, Chowhound, for bring this place to my attention! I needed some quality balsamic vinegar and after reading reviews for Soffritto on Urbanspoon, it sounded like a good spot. They had some decent looking foods in the deli counter, like fresh pasta & sauces, prepared meals in vaccum packs (like meatballs in tomato sauce, short ribs, pulled pork in honey BBQ sauce) and lots of specialty pantry items (hard to find grains, salts, etc).

The totally unexpected highlight for me was that they carry at least 30 different kinds of olive oil and balsamic vinegars in metal vats. You can sample every single one. There are different infused flavours like chilis, fruits, herbs, garlic, etc. The variety is huge. You can buy an extra small, small, medium or large bottle and they pour it from the vat for you. The prices are great too. I bought a small garlic oilve oil, a medium balsamic (no flavour), a bag of pulled pork and a small container of bruschetta, all for $40. The clerk even gave me an extra small bottle of dark chocolate balsamic for free (the vat was almost empty and there wasn't enough to fill my bottle. I got about 1/4 cup).

I am so happy to find this store. When I was in Chicago in 2008, I visited a store like this and didn't buy anything. Now I can! I wanted to gush to the owner but he was out and I don't think the young guy who served me had quite the same level of enthusiasm for ingredients :) Check it out if you're into specialty vinegars and oils.

I absolutely agree with the great comments about Soffritto on Canyon Meadows Drive. The quality of their olive oils and infused balsamic vinegars is outstanding and the owner is very knowledgeable about the origin and history of the oils and other products in his shop. I have purchased the fresh pastas and sauces from Soffritto many times and the urge you to try the meatballs - they are so tender and the marinara sauce has great flavor. Go - you will not be disappointed!
