Violino - Edmonton
Impromptu dinner out last night with the SO to Violino. We had avoided this place because of the last Italian place that was in this location (which was very overpriced). For some reason assumed incorrectly Violino was the same.
For the winter they have an incredible deal $19.95 for a four course meal, on Mon-Thurs. I opted for this. I was thinking they would be quite small plates, but they were not. 1st course was an antipasto platter, with Italian meats, seafood, marinated tomatoes and frittata. Penne with a tomato sauce (nice, light, flavourful, fresh), was second. 3rd was a choice of chicken or salmon. I had salmon, perfectly cooked, al dente baby veggies and braised cabbage on the side as well as potatoes (way too much food). Dessert was okay, it was a lime cheescake, I am not a huge cheesecake fan, but it was decent. Coffee or tea comes with this meal too. Overall a great deal! My SO had a ceasar salad and Veal marsala (a little sweet, but good), veal was a little pricey, but you got a decent amount.
the atmosphere is quiet, a little gauddy (marble walls, fabric chairs), the night was filled with lots of seniors. Our service was lacking unfortunately, but seeing the other waiters work the room, it was just ours, would not judge for this.
Overall, a great higher end Italian. This will be our Il Portico replacement.

That was a nice review to read because quite frankly, I still associate the location with La Spiga which I, apparently like you, was not overly impressed with.
