Believe it or not, I had one of the best reubens of my life at the Science Museum cafe. Cooked fresh to order on a griddle while I watched, it was perfectly prepared. They have an extensive menu and a large, bright sitting area with huge windows overlooking the river. We watched eagles soaring over the water while we ate. if the burgers are anything like the reuben, you'd have a great meal!

If these count as "in the area," they'd be my top picks:
Shamrock's
The Nook
Closer to the Science Museum with less awesome but perfectly satisfying burgers are:
Bulldog
Backstreet Grill
All of the above are child-friendly.

Nook. He'll have fun choosing a burger off the list. Everyone that loves hamburgers (or jucy's or whatever) loves this place. And the fries....oh the fries. I was just there again two Sundays ago. Never have been unsatisfied there. Not yet. Shamrock's--TDQ had a deal about this. She didn't think the fries were as good.

Not only did I not think the fries at Shamrock's were dreadful (except on the very last of about a dozen visits), I completely gave up on their Molitor burger (to the point of leaving more than half of it uneaten) and, in fact, Shamrock's altogether.
I love the Nook but the OP should plan on having to wait.
So, I'll tell you, I think the very best burger near the Science Museum, if you're going during the day is Meritage. You may not want to bring a child during the height of the lunch hour, but someone reported on this board in the past that Meritage was very gracious about welcoming young children.

TDQ - if they go the Nook-I think it depends on which days. Ok, so now I think that I've been to Nook at least a dozen times-I've NEVER NEVER waited. I've gone on Wednesdays at 5:15 (multiple times) and twice on Sundays right at 11....always got a table. Not sure what that is about...but I agree...have a back up plan cuz when there is a line. There is a LINE. And for the record, if it is burgers-you'll be happy. I don't eat burgers...but their bourbon bacon chicken sandwich is very tasty.

You haven't had to wait because you're going just at the right times. A little later on either of those days (or any day) makes all the difference. Worth the wait to me though - now I'm craving a Nookie, cheese curds and 1919 on tap. <sigh>

I was just about to recommend Meritage, too. Downtowner is nearby and also has a good burger.

I like the Moe's fries (or whatever they are called) at the Downtowner.

The Liffey.

The Downtowner and Liffey are convenient to the Science Museum. But I would not attempt them now with the high school sports tournaments at the X. They will be jam packed.
In fact, I would think that parking would be hard to come by unless the Science Museum has its own somehow.

The Science Museum has a 6 story parking ramp.
