Salty Ice Cream?

One of my favorite combos is salty & sweet. Had some Haagen Daz butter pecan tonight that was perfect -- almost tasted like it was laced with salt. And that made me wonder....do any of our local ice cream places have a salted flavor that's especially good? I've had the olive oil gelato at Otto topped with salt, and that fits the bill but hoping for more, especially things other than salted caramel. (Does anyone make salted butter ice cream?)

  1. There is a fantastic small ice cream maker in Columbus OH called Jeni's that is now being sold in Brooklyn:

Being from Columbus, I have tried many of the flavors and quite a few hit the salty/sweet combo. On their website they do have a seasonal flavor that includes salted butter (savannah buttermint) You can also order their ice cream online, though it's pretty expensive with the shipping and all I imagine.

Jeni's is AMAZING!!! And I saw they sell it now at Dean and Deluca in Manhattan-it's a little pricey but worth it!

Forager's in DUMBO sells Jeni's as well, I'll also throw my hat in for calling it amazing. The Salty Caramel is fantastic. It's $10 a pint but worth it.

    2. I love salty ice cream, too! Here are some of my favorite pints that are available in your grocer's freezer:

Haagen Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter is also salty/sweet and one of my faves.

      2. Last fall i had an interesting salted cucumber at Milk Bar. Keep on the lookout as thier flavors change.

In addition to the olive oil (which I personally didn't care for), I believe Otto had a salted caramel flavor whcih was delicious.

          2. Not salty ice cream per se, but i think Momofuku Milk Bar's soft serves have more than a typical amount of salt, even in its super sweet flavors. Even the red velvet soft serve this month hits a salty note with me through its heavy rich sweetness. They have a cream cheese frosting flavor that might be salty enough for you, but keep on the lookout for the new ones, they often have savory ice cream offerings

Just tried their red velvet cake soft serve swirled with cream cheese frosting soft serve -- I loved it! While I like the Milk Bar in general, I haven't liked their soft serve since salty pistachio. Definitely worth getting!

            2. there are a few flavors you can try at chinatown ice cream factory

Oops, just saw your post, after I made my post. Sorry!

              2. There's a very small ice creamery in NE PA called Eder's Ice Cream that used to make a delicious vanilla bean ice cream with mixed with bits of salty sourdough pretzels. So good.

Do they maybe have a s&s ice cream at The Chinatown Ice Cream Factory? I loved their black sesame which may fit the bill for you.

i am shocked nobody mentioned the salted caramel custard that is frequently served at Shack Shack....those custards are so good, very underrated imo....

                2. Just went to Prune last night and they had an interesting dessert on the menu: ricotta ice cream with salty caramel "croutons." Unfortunately our dinner ran a bit long and we had an engagement to make it to, so couldn't try it but it sounds adventurously salty-sweet! Anyone tried it?

                  1. If you're interested in store bought, Ben & Jerry's "Chubby Hubby" fits the bill. Vanilla malted ice cream with chocolate covered pretzels and swirls of fudge and peanut butter. Yummm.
