Shad Roe

Any sightings of shad roe in stores or on menus in Fairfield County? Seems early still, but I'm always afraid I'll miss the season.

While I'm on the subject, if anyone has an inspired wine pairing suggestion, I'm all ears. I usually just saute the roe lightly in butter, then squeeze a lemon over it and add a spoonful of capers.

Hmmm. Not sure, but I think the Hudson River just might be closed to shad fishing just now due to population crash. They even canceled the Hudson River Shadfest in Kingston last year due to lack of fish....Don't be disappointed if you don't find any roe this year, let's hope this ancient species can recover.

I found it today at the Lobster House fish market in Cape May, NJ $7.50 a set. You might be able to get them to overnight them to you if you are willing to pay the price. It's a nice weekend so take a drive to lovely Cape May.
