Visiting from Montréal, Canada

Hello fellow New England Chowhounders.

My wife and I are planning to visit relatives in the Stratham/Portsmouth, NH area and want to have some recommendations as to where to eat.

We like a variety of foods anything: from best 'grinder'' joint, a great cup of chowder to a 4 star restaurant. We dislike stale and generic chains-- don't care if its a truck stop--we just want honest, solid, good food!
Just based on quick research, people seem to like Newicks... is this place any good?

Waiting for your recommendations and thanks in advance.

  1. Newicks is one of biggest tourist joints north of Boston; old but now living on it's past fame. Even Bob's Clam Hut across the river (Which I don't care for either.) in Kittery is better. There are some good reviews for Chaunsey Creek (?) , another lobster place in Kittery, but I've not been.

      Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier?
      16 Chauncey Creek Road

Though the OP may have travel meals figured out, here is my Vermont-New Hampshire map:

    2. I would avoid Newick's.

Just search Chowhound for Portsmouth, Kittery and/or Dover NH for suggestions on the area.

      1. I'd head towards Rye and go to Petey's, especially for their chowder. Then at least you can enjoy the beautiful drive along the shore...if you hit it right you can spot a lot of surfers in that area. I just can't imagine being in that area and not eating right by the water just once.

If you like beer, be sure to stop by either Smuttynose or Portsmouth Brewery.

        Enjoy your trip!
