Natalia's Elegant Creations--Elegant enough for a birthday surprise?
Its Mom's 81st birthday and we are sending cake. And you'd be amazed at the complications in sending a cake--or finding a good local place [Mom is in McLean] that delivers---when you are half way across the country as I am. In fact, I tried to do this same thing last year and it was a disaster because I couldn't coordinate Mom at home and delivery.
But I digress.
Someone on this list recommended Natalia's Elegant Creations in Falls Church. It is supposed to be a more european style bakery with tortes and the like. Mom, being well travelled, likes tortes and things like that. The cakes look tasty, the cost is not overbearing.

I also found Elegant Cheese Cake in Half Moon Bay. http://www.elegantcheesecakes.com/
In return for the sale of a kidney, they can deliver a cheese cake to mom for her birthday. The photos looks nice enough and I was all set to do it until I looked on "that other food site" and found some worrisome negative reviews mostly complaining about attitude and service. Then I re-googled them and found some of their cakes on Costco. . . . hmmmm. I confess I'm not sure how I feel about sending Mom a cake that she can call the "cake from Costco" [and if she found out, odds are good that she would]. Then again, someone on the SF thread said this place delivers cheesecake to the White House. . . .
So fellow 'hounds---anyone tried Natalias OR ordered from Elegant Cheesecakes? Or is there someplace else you might suggest? your thoughts greatly appreciated but time is of the essence as the luncheon is on Friday.

Everything I've tried at Natalia's has been good....but I've never had cake from there. I've always wanted to try the Hungarian Hazelnut Torte and the Ukrainian Walnut Torte. The owner/baker is from Eastern Europe (Ukraine, I think) and I imagine excels at such cakes.

Natalia's is very good, though I've not had cake from there, more 'elegant creations' like cherry almond torte. High, high quality.
The tiramisu at pastry xpo is very good. I did a tasting there and thought it was their best item. My family has a frosting aversion, so many cakes are too sweet for us.
