Places around Johnson City / Bristol area

Going to be in the area visting friends and would like to find some places to try. Also would love a good burger from a place like on DDD.

My husband and I just traveled down I-81 from maryland to Gatlinburg for a long weekend and one of our criteria for the trip was some good bbq. I couldn't find any consistently decent reviews for bbq in Gatlinburg or the surrounding towns, but then I stumbled upon a review for Ridgewood BBQ in Bluff City, Tn - about two hours north of our destination, but perfect for a dinner time detour along our trip. If you look up Ridgewood on the internet, you'll find more reviews on Yelp, especially, but since its so rare that a place lives up to its hype for me - I needed to come back to this site and report that Ridgewood has awesome bbq, and has a true "local joint" feel to it. Per the reviews, we got the pork sandwiches with the slaw on it, sides of baked beans, fries, and sweet tea. Everything was awesome -but as a cook, the beans especially blew me away. So good. Definitely a fun place to go with friends! Don't go if you're in a hurry, though, because there was a wait.

I forgot about Hi-Lo Burger on Lee Highway between Bristol VA and Abingdon. It's a little drive through place and had limited hours, but it's a really good burger.

Would also recommend Mothers in Bristol at 1500 Euclid Avenue across from Food City. It's good home cooking meat and three place. Don't be scared by the outside. They have good burgers too.

I second the reccomendation for Troutdale Bistro. Ate their last week and was wowed! Great fresh local food and thoughtful service. Say yes to dessert!

Troutdale Bistro in downtown Bristol is nice. I can't advise on the burgers, but you can get a really great Cuban at The Dining Room in Jonesborough. They also have a sirloin sandwich that is ridiculously good. They have some of their bread flown in from a bakery in Miami. Goooood stuff.

Firehouse Barbeque on State of Franklin St is the best I have ever eaten.!

I second the Firehouse; however, it is not on State of Franklin. It is on West Walnut Street. I always get the original thin sliced pork platter with bbq beans. Not a fan of their coleslaw though.

Favorite local restaurants: The Red Chili (Elizabethton - open W-Sat 11-4) for incredible Korean, Ridgewood Barbeque in... Bluff City for BBQ, StirFry in Johnson City for Asian/Sushi, Cafe 111 in Johnson City for the same... There are a lot of good little places - just avoid the chains! =)
