Kitchener: Restaurants close to Delta hotel?

Hey all,

I'll be at a conference at the Delta Kitchener/Waterloo hotel tomorrow, at 105 King St. East. Any recommendations for dinner close by? All cuisines will be considered, but we would prefer the price point to be mid- to low.

Thanks!

A few conference attendees grabbed a quick dinner at the Pupusaria around the corner from the hotel. They said the pupusas were really good. Will give them a try today and report back.

Two Goblets great for schnitzel/Romanian specialties; Cameron Seafood Restaurant on Charles st. around the corner from your hotel - best chinese in KW. If you want cheap, and VERY casual (but a real CHOWFIND IMHO) Taste of Philly Cheesteak on King St. downtown serves the best Philly cheesteak outside of Philadelphia (my fave is Jim's on South st.- wouldn't bother with Pat's or Geno's) owner Matthew is a great guy who makes a delicous sandwich! There's also a good Pho place at King and Water downtown. (I'm told...not much of a Pho fan) Around the corner on Water also a decent (sit down) gourmet pizza place (name escapes me at the moment...) Good Luck!

Caffe Bolero is what you're thinking of..I think. (http://www.caffegallerybolero.ca) Their quality has gone down recently. I'd second Ellison's and Two Goblets - two unique dining experiences and reasonably priced.

Just got back from the pho place -- "Pho 95", smelling like pho. Haha I wanted to try the philly steak but it's already closed by the time I walked there.

The pho I had was alright, quite the average you'd find in and around Toronto. Did not expect gourmet anyway, but it is nonetheless comforting to have something hot-soup-ish after a walk on a breezy street without wearing enough.

The soup remained hot after I devoured the medium-size order, which is quite important for pho with rare beef because you want to cook the beef as you eat to make tender slices, not undone bloody slices submerged in lukewarm broth. Too bad, the rare beef I had was a bit tough and livered.

Good recommendation on Taste of Philly Cheesteak! I chowed down the whole foot-long without hesitation, though I usually eat much less. Still the tasteful flavour lingers in my mouth.

Foodies in BFH conference, you're missing out (by going elsewhere on the only night out)!

As Matt recommended, top the sandwich simply. I chose havarti infused with chipotle as the melt, and simply topped it with lettuce and green olives (or tomatoes), with a sprinkles of dried oregano and pepper. There could be less mayo, but since I'm having dinner early and a long night to go, why not?

They're serving dessert downstairs with the Salad Bar Beef guy, but mind me not, I've already indulged.

We ended up going to Cameron's Seafood restaurant. Being in a bit of a rush (only 1.5 hrs for dinner) we chose to 'Special dinner for 5', plus an extra order of Beef w/ Green peppers (one of the guests insisted on ordering something that she recognized :) If I recall correctly...

-The breaded calamari was so-so: a little more toothy than I might have liked, and the batter wasn't as light and fluffy as I prefer. Fry oil not hot enough, perhaps?
-Chicken dish (forget the name) was quite nice: very tender, subtle flavour, but it was cut up post-cooking and wasn't de-boned: you have to keep a sharp tongue out for small bones.
-Chinese greens, while simple, were very fresh and tasty
-Crab was quite a disappointment. Pretty slim legs, not much meat, more difficult than usual to access, and the taste was sort of gelatinous and 'blah'.
-The big star was the cod in black bean sauce: very tender fish (but, again, bone in and cut up so watch out!) with a subtle but tasty sauce. Very nice.
-Beef & green peppers were... well, beef and green peppers, but with better beef than you usually get from the corner chinese place.

All in all, 3 starts. I'd go back in a pinch, but it's not a destination.

Re: Cameron... strange, in spite of the name, I generally don't bother with thier Seafood. I agree re: Greens (Snow Pea Leaves in Garlic with Mushrooms are great!) and I enjoy their Chicken Sichuan and Shrimp w/ Peppercorn sauce... Beef dishes and Singapore noodles are good... Unfortunately, in a town where Chinese often means Breaded Chicken balls with gooey red sauce, it IS a destination IMHO. *sigh* BTW... If you love a good sandwich try Philly next time in KW. Gustas experience is quite typical. A real Chowfind!

Mmm Cameron House. I miss this place! It wouldn't get much press in Toronto, but like KWFoodie says: hey, it's Kitchener.
I have severely fond memories of going there, with a slight hangover and a XL appetite for their a-la-carte dim sum on Sunday mornings. Pork and almond steamed dumplings ahhhhhh, so tasty.

Thanks for asking the question. I'm assuming you're going to the Bring Food Home conference? www.bringfoodhome.com
