Went with my girlfriend to a pre-movie dinner at Tengu in Westwood this past weekend. The sushi was pretty good, nothing great, but we were SHOCKED when the bill came. For a couple of rolls, a salad and two drinks, the total came to 85 bucks. The service was decent and the room is nice, but for that price, Hamasaku is wayyy better. My girlfriend was talking to the DJ (who was really good) and even he admitted that the sushi is completely overpriced. He said next time to try the cooked food, because it's really something special... but i highly doubt there's going to be a next time. Anyone have a similar experience?

Yes, I had the same experience. The sushi was fine, but no more than that. Just fine. One sushi roll was $16 and it was nothing great. Completely overpriced, and the atmosphere, while cool, does not come close to making up for the price markup.
Would possibly go for happy hour, but never again for dinner.

Tengu, sadly, is a nice place to go for a drink. Period. If you are really hungry, go elsewhere. But a drink, and a snack - ONE cooked dish, or one cut roll while you're drinking.

It's a pretty room. BUt for the money, you're better off at MOri, shibucho, wherever Ryo reopens, or Yamakasa with kawasaki-san.

And if you do go for a snack, try to go during happy hour to avoid the $85 bill. The happy hour menu has some decent food for non-offensive prices...watch out for the drinks, though; those are the same price durign happy hour.
