dress code enforced restaurant in LA

hi!
I am looking for a place to have my 30th bday party and want to get all dolled up. I have never been to a place where i have seen people really dressed up so not sure where to go and not feel over dressed. Good food is a must! Anywhere from SFV to Pasadena. Thanks in advance!

For the record, I wore my silk hopsack blazer, a bow tie and my good Panama fedora (see avatar) to The Edison one evening, and fit right in. Two guys we were with came in jeans, but what the hey.

You can't miss with Mr. Chow's in Beverly Hills, or Spago. Not white tie but not muscle shirts and sandals either. Pretty snappy crowd in both places, and it's YOUR birthday. No glitter and glam will be too much.

Over on Abbot Kinney in Venice is a fabulous new restaurant, The Tasting Kitchen. A younger, stylish crowd and terrific waiters who really know their menues and make great suggestions. Also excellent wine list.

I was at Spago recently and while there were a number of ladies in nice dresses, there were a lot of people very casually dressed in jeans and sneakers, who seemed to be tourists. Overall, Spago was more casual than most fine dining restaurants I've been to. More broadly, I think most fine dining restaurants in L.A. have a pretty wide mix of dress, so if you want to get dressed up then go ahead.
