Birthday dinner - good cocktails?

I'm turning 28 and looking for a place for a nice dinner with my sister for my birthday this Friday...I enjoy good cocktails, so a place that has a thoughtful drink menu would be a plus. Also, not so loud that a conversation is impossible. I'm open to different kinds of food, and enjoy adventurous food (though food that's on the lighter side would be nice, as we have brunch at Locanda Verde the next day). The only thing out is sushi, which she doesn't much enjoy. Thanks so much!

  1. Not sure how much you want to spend but several places come to mind.(1) Employees Only in the West Village.I think of it as more of a cocktail place, but the food is also good.(2)The Harrison in Tribeca.Good food.Relaxed, relatively quiet setting.Good bartenders.
(3)Dylan Prime.Steakhouse in Tribeca a couple of blocks from The Harrison.Young crowd with an even mix of men and women.Very good drink list.(4) The Modern at MoMA.Two dining areas.A more casual room that shares space with the bar.A more formal dining room that overlooks the sculpture garden.I prefer the more casual area, but it is noisier.(5) A few Asians restaurants.Tao(east 50s) has an interesting food and drink menu but can be loud and is a scene type of place.Buddakan and China Brasserie are
also good.Wherever you go I hope you have a fun night.Happy birthday.

    1. Another vote for the Modern at the MoMA. I prefer the Bar Room, but as the previous poster mentioned, it can get a little noisy. You could also consider BarBao (modern Asian/Vietnamese) or Yerba Buena Perry (Latin).

Thank you for the suggestions! I really like the idea of the Modern and Employees Only (it's been on my list for a while). I'm also considering Dirt Candy, Degustation, and the Redhead (started to give up on drinks and look just at the menu). I may have to resort to sophisticated decision making techniques like flipping a coin here...

      2. Bobo has fantastic cocktails and great food. It does get a bit loud depending on the night and depending on where you sit, so that could be a problem for you. I don't think it's unreasonably loud at all but others might feel differently.
