Where to find Kumquats in Montreal

  • 5

Hey there,

First-time poster and relatively new transplant to Montreal. Anyone know where I can find Kumquats in Montreal?

Thanks,

Ceds

  1. Usually the market in Chinatown has them, but they are not in season right now, so they will be way harder to find.

Actually, it *is* kumquat season in the northern hemisphere. "Kumquats are in season from November to March" -Chez Panisse Fruits. See also the (Florida) Kumquat Growers Inc. site -- www.kumquatgrowers.com -- which says the season runs from "November until April." But the site also splashes with a big disclaimer: "Due to the January 10th, 2010 freeze, fresh kumquats will not [be] available until November 2010."

A lot of the kumquats we see in Montreal don't come from the States, however. Israel is a common source. Still, the loss of the Florida crop may have put pressure on prices and increased demand for fruits from other areas. Outside of Chinatown, fancy greengrocers -- Chez Nino and Chez Louis at the Jean Talon Market, ExoFruits in CĂ´tes des Neiges, etc. -- often sell them. That said, I don't recall seeing any recently, though I haven't been looking. Will keep an eye peeled; in the meantime, fatkidc might consider letting his/her fingers do the walking before heading off on a wild kumquat chase.

Thanks both. I actually live close to Chinatown and wasn't able to find them hence my post. Thanks for the suggestions, great idea about doing some research before I chase them.

It's funny, my mom was just visiting from Ontario and she'd purchased some at one of the Chinese markets in Toronto and brought some here, hence the sudden craving.

Actually, I did see some at ExoFruits (but I didn't check the price).
