Making fish and chips this weekend. Anyone know where I can find malted vinegar (on the island)?

Just about every grocery store has malt vinegar a.k.a. fish and chip vinegar. It's very easy to find.

Unless you're talking about some artisanal product I've never heard of, what you're looking for is usually called malt vinegar. The most common variety is distilled light malt vinegar, also known as white vinegar. Can be found in every supermarket.

Malted vinegar is made from barley, is less acidic and brown in colour. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malt_vin...).
English/Irish pubs in Montreal will give you white vinegar but it's a whole different animal. I will only use white vinegar for pickling and cleaning :-
)BTW: I checked PA, no luck.

OK. So what you want is undistilled malt vinegar. Heinz sells it in the States but I don't recall ever seeing any Heinz vinegars in Montreal, nor are any listed on the Heinz Canada website.
Just called Bramble House -- www.bramblehouse.net/index.html -- to inquire. They don't stock Heinz vinegars but they do have Sarson's Malt Vinegar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarson%27s The clerk I spoke to was vague about the exact colour, so you might want to investigate further before schlepping out to the west island.

Saw some at La Depense - east side of JTM. But $6+ for 250ml. Not as dark as I remember. Sorry can't remember the brand name.

The brand I've seen the most in grocery stores is Crosse & Blackwell. There's also a brand that comes in plastic bottles like the ones for distilled vinegar. I tought it was Heinz, but carswell has me doubting. I got mine at Metro Morgan in Hochelaga. Once again, I'm sure it's very easy to find.

There was a shortage of Malt Vinegar for close to a year in Canada, but everything is back. We just picked up a bottle of Heinz Malt Vinegar at Maxi in Pointe-Claire and have now seen it at both Loblaws and IGA

Thanks for all your help. Ended up finding it in Van Houtte (Laurier). It's a French vinegar brand but it said product of England on the back label. It was light brown ... and very yummy!

If you want the authentic stuff, not Heinz or any domestic crap, drop by The Bramble House in Pointe Claire http://www.bramblehouse.net/
They have authentic Sarson's Malt Vinegar imported from the UK available for a measly few bucks.
