ISO Ethiopian Tef flour

Anyone know where I can buy some tef flour to make injera? No location is too remote....

    1. You could try Akhavan - they sell injera itself as well as a lot of different types of flour. I'll check for you next time I'm there.

        1. I remember PA downtown having tef flour, however if memory serves it was quite expensive.

            1. Been awhile since I've posted....

Aliments Naturels Fleur Sauvage on Monkland has had tef flour in the past, but I don't know if they keep it in stock all the time. They are usually pretty good about taking special orders for things like that even if they don't carry them on the shelf.

P.S. I'm pretty sure the brand the flour is sold under is " Bob's red mill "

                  Say Moosemeat,

Do you, by chance, know the brand of the ready to eat pappadums that come in the pringles type container?

                  • Since then I have seen it at Tao on St. Denis/Rachel, I think also from Bob's Red Mill, and it was what I would classify as EXPENSIVE, going for around $9.50 a kilo.

Quite a difference from the last place I bought it, where a very nice old Ethiopian man scooped it out of a big burlap sack on the floor of a tiny market stall. I think it cost about $1 a kilo.

Sorry you haven't been able to find it at a reasonable price - and sorry I forgot to post back here that I checked at Akhavan (NDG location) and unfortunately they didn't have it. I wonder if any local African grocery markets would have it at a better price? There are some listed here - maybe you want to call first before trekking out.

                            hi karela,
when you say "from the last place i bought it", where exactly was that? I'm desperate to find really cheap teff flour in montreal, was that in africa or here? thank you!

                              1. re: soleildor

Strangely enough, it was at a market in Jerusalem. Israel has a rather large Ethiopian population!

                              2. The cheapest I've found it is downtown at Marche Al Mizan at the corner of St. Mathieu and Maisonneuve. Right across from the metro station.

Being a small market though, if they sell out of some things (like White Whole Wheat flour which I've been trying to get for ages), they may never get it back.
