"Real" turkey?

khoffdenver Feb 26, 2010 10:34 AM

I'm planning a trip to NYC in June and already obsessing about restaurants, bakeries, etc. This board has been very helpful!
I see (from MenuPages) that many diner/coffee shop places offer a hot turkey sandwich and/or roast turkey dinner. Can you suggest any places where I can expect this to be like Thanksgiving turkey -- hand-carved slices from a whole roasted turkey, rather than uniform thin slices from a processed turkey breast?
We'll be staying at the Eastgate Towers (3rd st. and 39th ave.) but will be getting around to various sights and neighborhoods in Manhattan (and maybe Brooklyn) -- although if I intend to drag my family along to a "destination diner," it would be nice if there were other interesting things in the area.

You are actually staying at 3rd Ave and 39th Street, this is near Grand Central.

Aaargh! Of course you're right -- I'd better get that straight before I get there! And there's no way to edit my original post now, so my embarrassing mistake will remain forever.

there's no shame in not knowing the finer points of a place you're not familiar with. just don't ask anyone which way 39th Street is when you're standing on 38th...walk one block and if you're on 37th, turn around.

It's the coming up out of the subway and not knowing which direction is which that worries me (not too much -- I'm not losing sleep over it or anything like that). Here in Colorado we have a very convenient mountain range that marks West from anyplace in Denver.

I see I'm going to be doing even more walking that I thought I was!

Don't worry -- you'll find that New Yorkers like to help with directions as much as restaurants!

Thanks, everybody. The Gemini diner looks perfect.

Gemini Diner has a thanksgiving turkey dinner with real turkey, comes with stuffing and cranberry sauce if I remember correctly.
