Surprisingly Good Ribs at Redbones

I know Redbones has it's supporters, in the past my primary complaint has been consistency. But last night at least they nailed it. Perfectly done 1/2 rack of Memphis ribs, great collards, good mac and cheese. And the beer of course was excellent.

I am a die hard Blue Ribbon devotee, but if Redbones can consistently deliver the goods at that level then the game is on.

Yes, when Redbones hits it right, I think they are the best ribs around, though their consistency has been a big issue for me, too. Years ago, I went to an "all you can eat" brunch there many years ago when I lived in Somerville, that was so mind-roastingly abysmal, I vowed to never go back (like rib-shaped candlewax). Granted, I shouldn't have expected primo stuff out of an ayce steamer tray. Was lured back by a gift certificate, and have generally had good experiences, with the occasional perfectly barky, smoke ringed, slightly chewy rib.

I think they went through a rough patch but seem to be back in good form. I stopped going there for awhile, but the last few times I've been back, it's always been excellent.

As someone else pointed out, ordering the "one perfect rib" gets you the best they have to offer. A friend of mine notes that the brisket tends to be better when you order it alone, rather than as a combo.

thats good to hear as i have been totally disapointed there 4 visits running. swore the place off last time actually. if i had a time machine and could bring you back there 15 years ago when robert was behind the counter at the pit you'd be.. well as happy as i was. im a blue ribbon supporter too.

I was there for a dogfishhead event a couple weeks ago and really happy with our food. Except the buffalo scallops. They were soggy. But the St Louis ribs were awesome.

This is encouraging news. I had stopped going to Redbones because they just were not consistent and more often than not I left dissapointed. Their brisket could be amazing at times and I loved their sausages with a side of potato salad. Looks like I'll be giving them another try soon.

Stopped in, solo, a while back on a McKinnon run & had the fried oyster app & "1 perfect rib" - really hit the spot! Couple weeks back or so on a very cold & blustery Sat., arrived at noon at Toraya, but it was 3/4 full & we were a crew 9, so trooped up the block to BR. Ordered the "dinner for 6" (ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, jerk chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, collard greens, homemade pickles & corn bread & we still took home leftovers! Boy, were we happy campers.

Barmy and I have eaten at Redbones a couple of times in the past six months or so and also been very pleasantly surprised. Blue Ribbon still beats them, but they definitely seem to have stepped up their game.
