One that hasn't been mentioned yet is Cosette. It's a great little french bistro on 33rd St near 3rd ave.

        El Parador, 34th between 1st & 2nd (Mexican)

Water Front Ale House , corner of 30th and 2nd, for great draft beer selection and Amazing Pub Food.

The one time we tried El Parador, I found the food to be mediocre.

El Parador has really good Mexican food, very friendly service and awesome guacamole and margaritas. They have been in biz for 50years I think they are doing something right plus the OP asks for " GOOD " restaurant and El Parador is very good :)

The longevity of a restaurant does not necessarily mean that the food is anything to right home about. Until it closed last year, Tavern on the Green had been a mainstay on the NYC dining scene for ages, but nobody who cares about excellent food would ever recommend eating there.

              I'll ditto RGR's assessment.

                2nd Av. Deli is on 33rd, but b/t 3rd & Lex. I think Sarge's is superior.

I agree 100% with RGR! Sarge's has the best pastrami, and is open 24/7.

you've got that whole strip on east 34th between 2nd and 3rd, out of which the only one i consistently like is Ali Baba. But it's literally about 8 restaurants right there on the south side and they are all kinda booming, all the time.

If you're thinking of a lower price point in the immediate neighborhood, how about Pio Pio (try salchipapas and roasted chicken) or 2nd Avenue Deli?

I haven't been to that particular branch but I love Pio Pio's chicken in general. Good stuff, especially for that price.

It would be helpful to know exactly what you are looking for. Cuisine preferences? Casual or fancy? Lunch or dinner? Per person budget for food only (drinks, tax, & tips additional).

                    But to get you started...

                    Sarge's Deli, on 3rd, b/t 36th & 37th. Superb pastrami. Photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/11863391...
