My mom is up in NYC staying at the Salisbury hotel. I told her I'd get some recs for her to eat at. And now I turn to you.... Its gotta be super-cheap (10 bucks for lunch, 15-20 for dinner), but she'll eat anything.

The Salisbury is across from Carnegie Hall. Angelos pizza is next door and the Burger Joint is across the street. There is also Mangia close by.

Certe has very good croissants, which I discovered because they cater meetings for my office.

At Joe's Shanghai, another good budget item is the Shanghai-style flat noodles.

Other budget choices in the neighborhood (E. of 6th Ave.): TIna's (Cuban, a spinoff of Sophie's), Menkui-Tei and Menchanko-Tei (Japanese noodle shops).

Good adds! I LOVE the beef empanadas at Sophie's...and they're so cheap!

If your mom will eat anything, how about the halal cart on 53rd and 6th? It's one of the most popular places to eat in NYC and it's a food cart! Everything is under $6 and she can't miss it because there's always a long line. Might be exciting for her to try and rub elbows with the locals.
