Freshly-made falafel in Calgary!
Nonlinear, this is for you-
The space that used to be Falafel King in the Beltline (1610 10 St SW) is now unrelated to FK and is called Pharaoh's. Owner used to work for Shawarma Knight and he does the same cool, non-messy double-wrap shawarma as does SK. Excellent shawarma and they have house-made beet pickle for it, just amazing and a good deal with a non-huge but very satisfying "large" chix shawarma for $7.50.
Perhaps best of all-- Nonlinear-- is that falafel is ALWAYS made to order. I haven't tried it yet but am dying to.

Well, Pharaoh's has changed owners as of May 1, happy to say that the new owners still make the falafels fresh. I had a chicken shawarma there yesterday and it was okay, made the same double-wrapped way that they do at Shawarma Knight. DId not try the falafel.
Name is changing soon too. Same amazing hours, til 4am Th-Sat.

re: nonlinear
Got the combo special today- medium (pretty small medium but so what) wrap-- got falafel-- garlic potatoes and drink (bottle of water for me) for $7. Great deal.
Falafel is made from real fava beans, not a powder. It is delicious but I think can best be appreciated on a platter instead of the sandwich. The real treat was actually the potatoes- deep fried but still potato-ey, great texture, nice garlic sauce, real treat. Great lunch deal.

I was very disappointed to see that FK had closed but tried a Shawarma at Pharaoh's hoping it would be as good or better than FK. Sorry to say it was the WORST Shawarma I have ever had. The Chicken was so heavily over seasoned that the first bit tasted like pure salt it was just overpowering. After a few bites I had to stop as the flavour of the meat was so terrible I could not eat any more. I might have to give them the benefit of the doubt as they had just opened but overall the place looks a bit shabby since the new owner took over and the Shawarma was awful. It's a shame because I often went to FK for a late night bite and the food was consistently fantastic at that location :(
