Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Austin, TX

Friday/Saturday visit

Driving in next Friday afternoon and staying through Sunday. Need to know a couple good places.

I would like something BBQ (might hit Taylor) on the way down coming from Dallas. So that might get my BBQ fix then I will need maybe a mexican recommendation and in Austin BBQ recommendation (have had Stubb's and wasn't impressed) and maybe a late night place or two after the basketball games I could hit for some eats.

Thanks for any suggestions. I've only just driven through Austin and never got to spend any real time so I'm pretty excited.

Will be in the UT area as I'm coming down for the state basketball tournament, in case that helps with recommendations.

Also, maybe a seafood/fish joint; not looking to spend BIG money also. Maybe $20 max per person (poor coaches).

    1. Hell, one place you could go one night: Scholz's. Walk from the basketball game, drink some beer, and have some passable German food.

BBQ - Franklin's has been getting some good press here. Also close to the tournament.

May be try and combine your seafood/fish with mexican. Sazon on S Lamar has a couple of good fish dishes. As does Polvo's.

        1. For the seafood, you really can't go wrong with Quality Seafood on Airport near Koenig. Well priced and tasty no frills seafood.

            1. Well finished my trip this weekend. Friday on the way down stopped in Taylor and went to Louie Muellers for BBQ. It was perfect. Got there about 1:00 ordered a half pound of brisket, jalapeno sausage link and a beef rib and some potato salad. Everyone was friendly and after everything I heard I was ready for it to fall short but it did not. Great smoky peppery crust on the meat and the brisket and rib were so tender. I thought the jalapeno sausage was amazing; definitely a big difference in a homemade sausage and a mass produced sausage. I would recommend that place to anyone I talk to, one for the history and unique appeal of the location and two for the food. I would go back in a second.

For dinner on Friday night we went to Moonshine. It was okay I would say I also need to make note that i was full from earlier. I only ordered the cheeseburger and it was very good came with steak fries. It was like 10.99 and I'm one that doesn't believe any burger is worth more than 10.00. It was a nice place but not memorable (probably because of what I ordered not the restaurant itself).

Saturday for lunch wanted to go to the Hula Hut but there was a good wait so I went to El Arroyo (just because i had heard of it) I was really disappointed. Tortillas weren't even homemade. Seemed like your average to below average mexican food. I had a combo plate that came with a cheese enchilada and 6 oz steak. It was okay, but forgettable. Definitely wouldn't recommend it.

Saturday night, didn't want to pay for the parking so walked down from the basketball games at UT to Serrano's mexican restaurant (yes mexican food twice in a day). We walked past Brick Oven Pizza and I kind of wish we would have stopped there; however Serrano's appeared to have a nice atmosphere and we wanted to sit outside on the patio. I was impressed with Serrano's; I don't know if it was because of my earlier disappointment in the day with El Arroyo but everything seemed really good. The service was a little lacking, but food wise I was really pleased. I had the fajita enchiladas which were good. Also homemade tortillas, and for some reason as I get older that kind of tells me a restaurant goes the extra mile.

This was my first trip to Austin and I was very impressed with everything I saw and that is hard to say for a diehard Sooner. Hope to get back there soon and try out about a 1,000 other places I saw.

Thanks for the report back! I am not a fan of El Arroyo, either, but I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. I'm sure that IS hard for a Sooner to say. : ) I also agree about Moonshine. I've never been overwhelmed with their food. There are lots of places left for you to try, so come back soon!

Sorry about El Arroyo - I don't think many people on this board would recommend it. A mex restaurant has to pass the "Taco Cabana" test to be credible....I'm not sure that they even pass the Patio TV Dinner test.

Sorry to be so negative, but they served me the absolute worst excuse for a breakfast taco at a work-catered thing, and gave us fake orange drink for orange juice.
