If your friend is going to be in Gaines and you are coming from (I gather) Lansing area(?), would you consider heading in the direction of Fenton/Holly as opposed to Flint? There is The French Laundry in Fenton and Holly Hotel in, well, Holly. It seems like I am forgetting another option in Fenton, too... ah, anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there, even though it's not what you asked for. ; )

re: vtombrown
This might, in fact, be a good suggestion, but be sure to bring something to do while you wait for a table. Both Clarkston Union and Clarkston Woodshop (about a block away from each other) are, in my experience, *always* mobbed with people, and they don't have a call-ahead list, so it's quite often that you'll have 45-50 minutes to wait in an overcrowded, loud, small space that's got too few seats, and *far too many* idiots bringing their children with them to a bar, and letting them run around like chickens with their heads cut off.
You can see why I don't go very often. Just tried two weekends ago, and it was the exact same thing all over again, especially at the Woodshop!

I don't know anything in Gaines, but in Flint there are a few good places....not many mostly chains. Redwood Lodge on Hill Rd at I-75 is a decent place to go with someone. They have a lot of steak dishes....last I was there it was good.
Ruggeros on Linden at Corunna has good Italian food is a big favorite on the west side of town. Great pizza still made the old way and good pastas. I still like to stop there every few years and I live an hour away....maybe more nostalgic.Do you have a preference as to what type of food?
