  1. Any other parameters, such as type of cuisine or atmosphere? There are a lot of choices around there. Also, are you looking for a restaurant with a lively bar, or two separate venues?

We like any cuisine (love asian, vietnamese. french) bar does not need to be in the restaurant, no small portions:)

The London has a very nice bar (called, not surprisingly, The London Bar). That's where we relaxed and had drinks before heading to Seasonal Restaurant and Weinbar, a few blocks away, on 58th St., b/t 6th & 7th Avs. The Austrian cuisine served there is superb, service is friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is lovely. Open a little over a year, Seasonal has been deservedly awarded a Michelin star. You should have no difficulty meeting your budget.

The Modern, located in MoMA, is very close to The London, on 53rd, b/t 5th & 6th. We have not eaten in the very popular Bar Room, but it has lots of fans. We have been to the formal Dining Room (jackets required at dinner). The Alsacian-inspired French cuisine is sensational, service is faultless, and the appropriately modern space has a soaring ceiling and a lovely view out to the Sculpture Gardens. Presuming you want that $300 to be your out-the-door cost (food, wine, 9% tax & 20% tip), the 3-course prix fixe @$88pp + carefully chosen wine should work.
