Remember Me? checkbox on login disappeared
Since the reorganization of the boards the login screen no longer includes a check box to remember the user. Every time I have to log in now, it is necessary to type in my username and password. Even my browser doesn't prompt me to remember my password? Why has this disappeared? It is annoying to have to type in the userid and passwords.
That sounds like something may have changed on your browser's end, because I don't have that issue. I'd definitely double-check that you didn't accidentally turn off your browser's ability to accept cookies, in general, and for www.chow.com and chow.chowhound.com in particular.
Maybe the Chow tech folks can also chime in, but to me, this sounds like a browser problem rather than a site problem.

On second look, it does look like they've redone the login box so it's an AJAX-type overlay, with no "remember me" box, so that part has changed on the site's end. But you still shoudn't have to log in every time you return to the site, so I'd still suggest you check your browser preferences in terms of cookies. There may also be a specific password setting, depending on your browser. For instance, in Firefox settings there's a special box that says "Remember passwords for sites." - if you accidentally unchecked that (or the equivalent in another browser) it would explain the behaviour you're seeing.

Or maybe simpler... do you logout everytime you leave Chowhound? If you do .. don't

Ha - yes, good point, I never log out of Chowhound intentionally so that didn't even occur to me. ;-)

No, I do not log out each time. Chowhound logs me out about every two weeks. And I use two different computers, never log out on either one, and experiencing same issue on both.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, but....no settings have been changed in Firefox. I double-checked it just now, logged out of CH so I could double-check what happens when I log back in. No option to remember me, Firefox (running 3.5.8) did not prompt to remember my password, even though I have the check box to remember passwords checked.
I've also experimented with other sites and it is only Chowhound where there is no option to remember my user id and password, and only CH that forces me to type it in for each logon. Surely I am not the only person affected by this?

Is there any update on this problem? It's very annoying to have to keep entering the userid and password each time you have to log in. This happens with each browser I try.
Any feedback from the tech staff?????

I don't think there ever was a checkbox, the site just remembers you if you don't log out. If you're logged out, instead of hitting the 'login' button, hit myCHOW in the menu, and you'll get the old login screen. No checkbox -- yet it still keeps me logged in unless I specifically log out.
This may be a cookies issue -- you can try logging out, and then removing all your chow.com related cookies and see if logging back in helps.

Sorry, you're quite right - it didn't have the remember me option, it just seemed like it did.
This site has always logged me out after a few weeks of use and forced me to log in again. That's nothing new. I never turn off my computer or even quit my browser app. Hard to believe it's a cookies problem when I don't experience this with any other site that has me log in.
But thanks for the tip about hitting myCHOW to get the old login screen. That works fine! Now if it just wouldn't ever log me out ....

Well, we've sometimes had problems with peoples cookies in the past where removing all the chow ones and starting fresh with new cookies helped, so I thought I'd suggest it as a possible option.

Hitting myChow no longer works as before now. It also uses the new window that refuses to remember my userid/email and password. I did clear out all the cookies for chow and that made no difference. This is not the most major issue but is still very annoying.
I don't understand why it was changed ... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Came here to say the same thing....It doesn't work!!! It did, but not any longer!!!
It is "broke"....My question is..Why doesn't someone fix it?????????

I'm having the same problem. Very annoying. Never used to happen, but started about 2 weeks ago. Please FIX.

Okay, I was wrong in saying there was a remember me? checkbox. Nonetheless, the login box previously retained the userid and password, and since the 3/17 release it does not, whether you navigate to it from the login prompt or by clicking on mychow. It is not a cookies issue. Can it be restored to its former design?

Yes it can be restored to it's former design...If "they" want too....IMO "They" don't want too!
