I've been craving chinese congee (rice porridge dish) but don't know any places except in chinatown that actually have it on the menu... anyone know of anywhere closer to the UWS that serves it???

  1. While I would never travel to the UWS specifically for congee since there are so many great places downtown, the only place I know that serves it is China Fun off Columbus. Not bad!

I have menupages too and it says that China Fun only serve congee on the weekends.

I used to get it all the time when I lived up there. It's not bad. You should try it some time.

What are the great places downtown for congee?

My favorite is a restaurant called Congee, which is at 98 Bowery.

Not to be confused with Congee Bowery or Congee Village.

I agree with gutsofsteel. Congee @ 98 bowery is the best. The others are just good. Personal opinion.

What kind of congee do you suggest?

I like the abalone congee. I don't mind the rubbery texture. In fact i kind of prefer it as a contrast to the gooey rice. It reminds me of the congee i used to have at my friend's grandma's house. It's what got me to love mirugai so much. Kind of similar textures. What kind you prefer?

If the rice is "gooey" it's bad congee.

So how should a porridge be besides "gooey"? It's porridge. So what's your preference?

My personal favorite is frog, but I really like all of them.

My Chinese friend took me to a delicious congee place ever that he swears by and has been going to for the past 20 years, in the heart of chinatown, in sort of a grungy place with a name that i definitely can't pronounce or recall at the moment. next time i am there i will write down the address for you all!! we had the works - abalone, pork, beef, with the usual little boiled nuts. so delicious. and SO cheap.

                        Still waiting for that address!

Great NY Noodletown is the best I've had.
