Help me make dessert with these ingredients

starbucksbrew Feb 22, 2010 12:39 PM

I want to make something my kids will like, with strawberries, strawberry jello powder, whole wheat Ritz crackers, Cool Whip, and honey. I also have chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk on hand. I'm open to other ingredients, except I hate cream cheese and yogurt, and my son is allergic to oats, so no granola. I would love to hear your ideas!

Yay! Thanks for all your posts, how fun! What I ended up doing tonight was just a layered deep baking dish type pie with three layers of crackers, filled with a mixture of the cool whip, 1/2 can sweetened condensed milk, and 1/2 package jello powder, and topped the last layer of crackers with chocolate chips and let it set up in the refrig. I didn't use the honey. I will have to try some of your ideas too. I especially like the magic bar variation, and I thought about adding pretzels. My MIL makes a strawberry pretzel salad that's really similar to that, but I would have to figure out how to leave out the cream cheese. fun fun!

Your list of ingredients made me think of this dessert I recently saw on Food TV's Cooking for Real. Not sure if it fits the bill, but here's the link:

I would skip the cool whip and use a real product like shipped cream. You could probably skip the jello powder and make a variation on the 7 layer bar with the crackers and chips and condensed milk.

Hmm, interesting challenge. I remember in junior high the cafeteria would periodically prepare a dessert that was fruit jello mixed with cottage cheese/sour cream. It was actually not bad.

You could make jello with the strawberries cut up in it. Mix crushed crackers with honey to taste. When jello is solid, top with cool whip and cracker crumbs. Stir/cut with a spoon so that things are somewhat mixed but not too throughly blended.

Could be good, could be really disgusting.

You could make fresh strawberry pie and top it w/ Cool Whip: http://southernfood.about.com/od/stra...

Note, you can also make this pie without the gelatin, which I have always done, but I'm trying to play the game ;-) Instead of a pate brise crust, make a crumb crust w/ the Ritz crackers and melted butter and a little honey.

sbb, I would do exactly what danna recommends (including the Jello and the Ritz crust). Please report back as to how it goes.
