Tortas Y Taqueria Los Picudos, Richmond

Finally I have found a place in the El Cerrito Del Norte/Richmond district that is a taqueria at least close to on par with some of the places I like in the mission like Cancun and Farolito.

It has lower volume, so not quite as well-oiled a machine as those, but they have aguas frescas, good tacos and sopes. I do recommend all the basic fare over the combo meal platters that they offer.

Have only had the tortas from this spot, but highly recommended.

The tortas are the best I've found to date in the East Bay. Actually they are the best torta I've tried in the Bay Area.

This is their second location. They also have a shop in the Mission on 24th Street.

"It is an excellent sandwich and probably the closest I've had to a D.F torta in this area. It stirred up delicious memories, and didn't disappoint.

The roll is buttered and toasted in a press. I chose the beef milanesa, a thin, lightly breaded beef steak. It was pleasantly chewy. The fillings were not overwhelming, but balanced nicely with the bread and meat a little mayo, crema, chile, thin tomato slices, restrained use of romaine lettuce, thin red onion slices and avocado.

Really, order the Mexican cheese (queso fresco) on your sandwich. The cottage cheese like texture makes this sandwich. "

They have been consistant over the years.

The above link lists some of the other menu items and links to past reports about the SF location.

Thanks for bringing this place back into Chowhound radar.

If you are currently on the board, you might change the title from "Ricmond" to "San Pablo" If you miss the editing window, you can email the mods and ask the to make the change

If you're ever in the South Bay, I've found the ones at Bakery Mexico pretty good also, think a buck or 2 cheaper than Los Picudos.

Ah, I did not guess that they were related. There are so many taquerias with the same or similar names (sort of like a Thai place named Thaiphoon, ha!). If I had gone to the one on 24th I might have known, but I always do Farolito when I am in that hood, or (Dynamo Donut).

Correction noted, though I am not board savvy enough to send a change request. Will have to sort that out..

That is one of the few places I still stop at when I'm back up in the old 'hood. I really like the Carnitas torta.

Lots of good stuff in that area, especially down 23rd St. If search works ... sorry, I just don't have it in me to use it anymore ... search the restaurant database for "San Pablo" and Richmond. In adition to some really good Latino food there's some nice laotion food. Don't forget to stop by Grocery Outlet.

I used to go to that San Pablo GO, but I go to Pinole now -- much nicer.

Maybe you could tell us what you've bought recently at the Grocery Outlet in Pinole. No one seems to have started a GO thread for September.

While sipping on Fife Napa Valley 1997 Alluvial Vineyard Petite Syrah ($4.99) and Viru Estonian pilsner ($1.49/10 oz.) bought at Oakland GO this afternoon, I am slowly making notes for an 'Almost October GO' thread to go up tomorrow.
