What kind of coffee beans do you use?
We're trying to cutback on our pricey nespresso habit and switching back to beans for weekdays, so are looking for suggestions. In general, we like full bodied, dark-roasted, oily beans. Not fans of Stumptown, and so far we've tried Gorilla and thought, eh, fine, but not really robust enough. The new Union Market in Brooklyn sells a number of interesting and high-end brands: Counter Culture, Peet's, maybe La Colombe if I'm not mistaken, others I can't recall right now. I'd love your thoughts on these or any others you love. Thanks! Oh, and we're using an auto-drip machine.
First, Orleans Coffee Exchange, great variety, roasted to order and shipped quickly. They even have three varieties of coffee with chicory. Buy five lbs. get one free. We buy all dark or French roasts.
Second, we buy Trader Joe's various French Roast coffees.
Third (if we run out), Starbucks Sumatra or Verrona Decaf.
Since I roast my own (iRoast2), I order my green beans from either CoffeeDirect.com or Sweet Maria's. They both sell roasted beans, too. My everyday coffee is a plain old Colombian Supremo, but I like to order the 8 pound sampler from Sweet Maria's every now and then. BTW, if you like oily beans, I would suggest you try your hand at home roasting since, as a rule, oily beans are condidered by most to be OVER roasted and are not usually that available.
I also roast my own beans that I buy from Sweet Marias. It's very easy. You can get a roaster for less than $200 and roast the best quality beans that cost as little as 5-6 per lb., half the normal price, so the roaster would pay for itself it a relatively short time. And you end up with the freshest coffee roasted however you prefer.
