Monsignor's in Greenwood Heights/South Slope
Went to this newish place tonight and enjoyed it. Probably not a "destination" restaurant, but a nice, homey neighborhood place, that I hope makes it. On 5th Avenue between 20th and 21st Streets. It's billed as Italian American.
I had the roasted striped bass. It was prepared nicely with a little pureed black olive drizzled alongside. Salad, fried potato and roasted peppers rounded out the plate. It was nothing out of the ordinary, but a solid dish. Like I said, neighborhood, not destination.
Husband had the hangar steak, which I only got a little bite of, but iIt was great. Done prefectly medium rare with a balsamic, glazey type sauce. Grilled carrots and asparagus plus a little pile of fried potatoes. Again, they aren't innovating, but they are serving nice food.
The kids shared a pizza marg which they scarfed up. They also got fresh squeezed lemonade, which was a surprise and quite good.
The house red was tasty, but I thought a mite expensive at $7 a glass.
All-in-all a positive experience and I'm happy to have this place in the neighborhood. Down-to-earth, friendly, good old food.

PS We had homemade dessert waiting for us at home, so we didn't order, but the server and cook (Who I think owns the place) sent over a serving of fried ice cream for the table. Sweet.
Excellent food and service! Will definitely be going back for more.
