Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in New Orleans

In search of Crawfish, Mudbugs

Can't seem to find anything in here about crawfish boils in the FQ, at least nothing specific that is. Should I try and find a place during my food excursions or simply leave it till my big circle road trip to Avery Island, Lafayette, Baton Rouge and then back to NOLA?!

Looking forward to pinchin some tails and suckin some heads :)

    1. They boil crawfish at Yo Mama's. I've also smelled it on Decatur from some restaurant near the French Market, but I can't remember the name of the restaurant.

It is hardly worth it right now..weather has been cold, the crawfish are small and very few people in NOLA truly know what they are doing when it comes to boiling the things

          • I forgot when you're going to be in NO but the place to get some good crawfish would be the Crawfish Festival in Breaux Bridge April 30th for 3 days. I'm guessing there are plenty of good places to get some boiled crawfish south of I-10 between NO and Lafayette.

Arriving April 13 and departing on the 22nd Tex. Seems like my random dates coincide with absolutely....nothing O.o

I prefer to visit NO when nothing earth-shattering is going on. It's just too crowded for my liking during big events. I even plan my visits to the casino in the mornings and early afternoon. When the crowd starts coming in around 5:00 or so, I leave.

You might be in luck, big-time. Check with Hawk's in Rayne,LA. By the time of your visit, they ought to be in full-swing. If you have never been there you will need a native guide, compass, aerial maps and GPS to find it. Hawk has been famous for washing his crawfish and cleaning them out. in what purports to be a more thorough purging. Regardless, you'll enjoy telling the tale.

Looks like you have a chance in Belle Chasse.

                            Looks good midcity, thanks.

                            • At Ernst Cafe you can get three pounds of crawfish and a free Abita beer, or the other way around. I forget. Lucy's does boils too. You just have to call & see what day they are boiling.

Wow looks like I'm going to have to plan another trip next year to try and get hit all the wonderful places you guys have suggested to me. Thanks!

If you're taking an excursion to Avery Island & Lafayette, we've been eating boiled crawfish here for a while now. These are the best in the area, in order of preference:

                                          1. Cajun Claws in Abbeville
                                          2. Richard's in Abbeville
                                          3. Big John's in Erath

                                            1. re: BayouTeche

Thanks BayouTeche! Looks like I'll have to try and keep my eating to a minimum elsewhere as I've gotten MANY suggestions on what I need to try on my round trip out to Avery.
