Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in New Orleans

Must have snacks!

Already been to the Zapps potato chip site so I need to know from the NOLA natives what else I can hope to find in little plastic bags and bottles down there that I'm going to have to try. Jerky? Cheese doodles? Philidelphia punch? Abita Root Beer? Need some good ole fashioned junk food tips to stay healthy when I'm snacking down there.

Thanks.

    1. Hubig's Pies...but I feel obliged to say that these are not "junk food." Please....-)

        1. re: hazelhurst

my first thought was Hu-Bigs with their new Hu (Who) label in honor of us Who Dats!
my Abita picks right now are the AndyGator and the Abbey Ale.

            1. re: hazelhurst

Of course hazelhurst....why would Hubig's Fried pies be considered junk food? O.o What flavor should I try or simply go for the 12 pie 'n T-shirt combo they offer online?

Sweet potato is the best flavor of all, and is currently in season.

You can trust Uptown L...but I am not a sweet potato kinda guy. Besides, lemon fits my personality better (one of the only fruits I can stomach).

                                2. In terms of cheese doodles, try the different varieties of Elmer's Chee Wees. Try some of the different Big Shot soda drinks (strawberry use to be my favorite flavor) and Barq's root beer. Barq's in New Orleans doesn't taste like anywhere else. Pralines are also a must for candy. Blue Bell ice cream in any of the flavors too.

I like Creole Creamery the best. When we were at Bee Sweet, we got a box to go and ate one then and one that night and none of them tasted very moist. They had good flavor but a little dry for my taste. She was brand new then so I'll give her another try next visit.

My favorite snack is an iced coffee and a bag of beignets at Cafe du Monde because they are always fresh. I usually go to the one in the River Walk Mall for less of a wait.

Thanks texasredtop, makes my teeth hurt just looking at the menu for both those sites. Never new that many flavors of ice cream even existed. O.o

Creole Creamery is one of those places that, for me, always sounds better than it turns out to be. While yes, I know ice cream and gelato are NOT one and the same, my preference is always Brocato's or La Divina, if given a choice

                                                1. re: paz5559

While most might not think its a bad thing, I think Creole Creamery actually uses too much cream, if that's possible.

It is a sweet shop, lots of nice chocolates and pastries. The ice creams and gelatos there are very very good.

How do they serve them @ Luke's? Wedge of lemon? Saw a video for Casemento's where its lemon then ketchup, hot sauce and horseradish on the table.
