ISO casual cafe/winebar/coffee shop for group of 7 friday evening, preferably near MoMA
This is a crazy specific request, I know, but I'm meeting with a small group of writers to talk about our work. We're hoping to find somewhere near MoMA but we can travel elsewhere in Manhattan. Meeting up around 7 or 8. Hoping to linger.
That's peak dinner time on a Friday evening...

Have you actually been to Bar and Books? They are cigar bars...and there is nowhere for a party of 7 to sit. And it's not casual...they serve extremely expensive cocktails and it they have a dress code...
smoke, you recommend a lot of places that it seems like you've never actually been to...

yeah..beekman...

At the moment, Beekman is non-smoking but it is really not what the OP is after.
It's dark and date-y and expensive and has a dress code...and there are no tables for 7 people...and it can get very crowded on a Friday night and loud.
Why did you recommend Bar & Books to this person?

to ruin your day.

How long do you plan to meet for?
AQ Kafe on Bway at 58th is a good option, but they close at 8pm acording to the website,.

What about Le Pain Quotidien on the corner of 58th and 7th Ave (not sure how long you plan to be there, as it closes at 8:30...but if you arrived around 7, you should be good)
Also, Torino

This may work, but you may want to call ahead and see if they have room-it's not that large:

Casellula doesn't take reservations and it gets crowded on the weekends...
