Diners Drives Ins and Dives in North Jersey

i'm a big fan of Guy Fieri's show Diners Drive ins and Dives, and im lookin for some similar type places that he would visit, here in North Jersey (preferably Bergen County). Unfortunately, he always seems to be at a fun bar that has a great chef in the back, or a kitschy brunch joint, or a cool college eatery, or some awesome bbq place. When / if hes ever in NJ, its always a diner.... which to be honest, im tired of.

has anyone tried any place and said "yknow, this could be on Triple D?" if so, please let me know as im dying for something different, cheap, and awesome... open to everything

thanks in advance

  1. "When / if hes ever in NJ, its always a diner"
not *quite* true. he visited White Manna in Hackensack on one there's one burger joint ;)

try searching the Tristate archives for Englewood, Cliffside Park or North Bergen - there are some Chow-worthy, unassuming ethnic spots in those towns.

    1. I think he did the Circus Drive In in Wall Township on Rte 35; I you're on the way to the Manasquan area beaches it's worth a stop.

Circus Drive-In is one place I've never done, even though I once had a girlfriend in Brielle and I used to regularly visit clients in Manasquan and Point Pleasant for work back when I lived that way...

JayinPortland, love CDI for what it is, i think its a good fit for Triple D although no BIG sandwiches. Of course remember if you doooo come back that way during the winter, they are closed until Spring. In the Summer, they're closed on Mon&Tue too I think. Burger Express in Carteret is good, they were closed for a year or so and had to move due to NJT construction but are now reopened in full force. GREAT fried chicken sandwich, fries, friend chicken, etc... Ummm. I dont think Guy does chains but we like the garbage pail at Famous Daves, and then of course there's Harolds in Edison. Up in Englewood is a fun tasty place, Baumgartens - Chinese food and milkshakes - LOVE IT... :)

Guy has done some NJ joints. Check the food network web site.

            1. re: Papa Bing

the OP wasn't claiming that the show has never featured Northern NJ spots. the point is that they've all been diners (with the exception of White Manna).

            2. re: nyebaby37

the place in Englewood is Baumgart's, not Baumgartens. it's also a chain with several locations around the county. opinions are very divided - i personally can't stand their food, but i know some CHers love it.

              1. re: nyebaby37

If you mean Baumgart's--- I'm always amazed at why people love this place. Food is AWFUL and overpriced, ambience is dingy, even the ice cream is mediocre. I don't get it.

                1. re: menton1

oops, too many letters -- baumgarts / sorry to the friendly CH's... i kinda liked it there, egg cream was decent and the food was fun. not gourmet. didnt realize they were a chain though. just found it to be a fun place, not the four seasons...

                  1. re: nyebaby37

well like i said, opinions are very divided. i grew up nearby, and can honestly say i've never really enjoyed a meal there in the 20-plus years i was dragged there by family & friends. but my brother's kids love it, and i know people who have "favorite" dishes there. it just doesn't work for me.

the Englewood location is the original, but they've expanded to Edgewater, Livingston and Ridgewood over the years.

            1. re: TongoRad

DDD has been to White Manna in Hackensack. That's probably it, they don't like to do more than one place in the same area.

              1. re: menton1

Well, I wasn't specifically thinking terms of whether it would actually be featured on the show, just suggesting a place that yogi70 might like to check out based on the parameters in the original post.

                1. re: TongoRad

currently live in Hackensack, so ive been to white manna many times. as far as hot dogs joints go, i prefer hanks franks (in Lodi) over Hirams, although Hirams is pretty good too and you can have a beer (i like rutts hutt in clifton too).... maybe ill try Baumgarts one day.... but is that it??? i went to cubbys for bbq in south hackensack last week and was kinda disappointed, and my wallet was a lot lighter when i left. i guess Bergen isnt a good area for DDD type joints.

                  1. re: yogi70

don't bother with Baumgart's, you'll just be disappointed. i'll never understand why people like that place. i know menton1 will back me up on this one!

unfortunately, some of the places that i think would have been DDD-worthy have closed or changed hands in recent years. Callahan's & the original Sol & Sol deli in Fort Lee are two that come to mind.

while it may not be a "dive," have you tried Bennies in Englewood? excellent Lebanese food in a little joint on Palisade Ave just south of Engle Street.

                    1. re: goodhealthgourmet

I love Bennie's; it's definitely kind of funky and they've got the goods, even if it's just for a schwarma lunch. Probably not a DDD type place, but I'll definitely second the rec. Sol and Sol has the S&S deli just a few doors down from Bennie's, and you can definitely get some quality corned beef and pastrami sandwiches there. I can't speak to the rest of the menu.

I originally considered suggesting Cubby's, just for the 'vibe' of the place, but ultimately didn't think the food was up to it. It looks like they are still cranking out the same old stuff...

Another place to consider is the Filipino barbecue joint the New BBQ Pit- I posted about it here:

                    2. re: yogi70

I love the sesame chicken at Baumgart's. I also like the ice cream for dessert.

              2. Grub Hut in Manville serves up classic Triple D fare. Their cuisine is mexi-que. Yep, very good mexican and great BBQ in the same place.

                1. I recommended Hot Rods Real Pit BBQ in Wharton, NJ to the triple D some time back. Great Que there. Still waiting...

mcsheridan, that sounds like a great place! esp for DDD.
