Escolar Quest

Does anyone know where I can buy Escolar (also could be called escara, white tuna, super white tuna, butter fish)? The sushi place that I go to sells it for $2.50 a bite, which is ridiculously overpriced. I rather cut a fresh fillet up and eat it at home.

the fish lady at the hollywood farmer's market on sundays has had it recently.

Dry Dock Fish out of Fullerton (in most OC farmers' markets) carry it regularly.

I get it from the Fish Monger at the Mar Vista Farmer's Market...

I get it from the fish monger as well...very fresh and usually at a good price! I know you said you wanted it for sushi, and it is delicious this way...but I have found that Le Petit Greek on Larchmont usually has it grilled with olive oil, and their simple preparation is outstanding!

just don't eat too much in one sitting as it may cause gastrointestinal issues due to the wax esthers in the flesh.

I can attest to the very embarassing side effects of escolar. Proceed with caution, and with small portions.
